Poipu is a resort area with hotels and condos.
Lihue is the main city with fewer hotels and condos.
Not much difference in weather.
A better contrast to compare is Princeville/Hanalei with Poipu. Weather very much dependent on time of year.
Are you also considering Kauai in October 2012 for your honeymooon as you mention on your other posts?
You should get ahold of a Kauia guidebook to see what the story is.
Lihue would be my third choice for an October honeymoon.
I meant Lihue is the third choice of plance on Kauai.
October should be beautiful on Kauai - and if you had a storm it should blow thru quickly. Our favorite is up at Princeville/Hanalei - Bali Hai (see the classic movie - South Pacific which was filmed there http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052225/) but Poipu is also nice.
Lihue is not a resort area. The smaller hotels you find will be business hotels without beaches. Poipu has excellent weather because it is on the lee side of the island. It is a resort area with nice hotels and condominiums.
Poipu for first timers....
To me ... Poipu's more "generic beach resort." The North Shore is what's "WOW" about Kauai. I know others would agree--and disagree--with that assessment. Some like chocolate; some prefer vanilla. To me, Poipu is "vanilla" -- but you can do a couple of day trips to the North Shore, and Waimea Canyon.

The island's not that big ... you can't make a bad choice

We always stay in Poipu, and while I do agree that the north has more spectacular natural beauty than the south, and I do like the town of Hanelei, a great deal of the accommodations in the north are within the very manicured and, well, very "vanilla" Princeville Resort (think many acres, with golf courses, condo developments, hotels and private homes). That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it (songdoc, however, will vehemently disagree with me
What hotels or condos are you thinking about staying in? I stay at the Marriott in Lihue (own a timeshare there) and it is a very nice place although the North Shore is drop dead gorgeous and Poipu is very nice as well.
OP? any response?
