It will probably be pretty quiet in St Pete at that time! I suggest you stay at the Don Cesar; it's a lovely property.

Thanks for your reply, Linda. I think we'd prefer not to be on the beach. Beach hotels usually have a kind of damp feeling, and while I don't mind that when it's to be a genuine beach-out vacation, I think I'd prefer something not on the beach for this overnight. I wonder what the Renaissance Vinoy is like. Trip Advisor gives it some not so great reviews. I hope I'll hear from Fodor's folks who've been there recently.

It is fine. I doubt there is a hotel on the planet that would have all good reviews on Trip Advisor, and I mean that seriously! It's in a quieter section of St Pete, and I know that's important to you. I honestly can't remember our room now so I'd say neither exceptional nor bad. My husband ran another 4* in Tampa at the time and we are pretty critical, especially when it comes to competitors, , but I don't recall anything worth complaining about.

Having seen your previous posts, his former hotel, Grand Hyatt, which might have been another option for you, probably is not. If they could guarantee you a room in the tower facing the bay, it would be quiet, but if you got one of the casitas there is the potential for air traffic noise, which for some reason is not heard at all in the tower. The only other I'd recommend is the Don CeSar, but you've just nixed that. Lovely hotel. These are the best 3 in Tampa Bay.

Rereading my post, the "it's fine" comment is ambiguous...I meant the Vinoy is fine.

I should add that I've also stayed in the Don and there was no damp smell or feel to our Gulf front room there. The one complaint I've heard of the Don is the room sizes, but we had a junior suite. If I were to chose between the Vinoy and the Don, I'd most definitely chose the Don.

OO: thanks much for your reply-- very very helpful. In fact I'd made reservations at the Grand Hyatt, in a casita, both because I'd read good reviews about it and because we much prefer the casita kind of acccommodation to a more traditional hotel set-up. But then I read (I guess on Trip Advisor) about the plane noise, so I nixed the idea. (I so apprecite when people are specific abt things like that-- pro and con). I will look into Don Cesar at your recommendation.
