My husband and I love the National Parks. So looking forward to visiting Yosemite in September, after the Labor Day week. I have already searched for accomodations and booked one week at Tenaya Lodge. That was not an easy feat, but was afraid to wait on advice, so many I looked at were already booked during out dates. But it can be cancelled if needed, or so I was led to believe.
I am thinking we might fly into Fresno as it is only about hour and half according to Yahoo.maps to the lodge. I have never been to California. We are from a rural small town and not use to high volume traffic. Occasionally we have to travel through Atlanta, GA and I about have a nervous breakdown. We have visited Yellowstone and Glacier National Park several years back and love, love, loved it. We flew into Salt Lake City and had no traffic problems, but I hear the freeways in California are a different story.
What are the must see sites and will it be crowded during early September? We chose this time to maybe avoid the crowds and winter weather. We are mid-sixties, so limited to some activities, not campers at all or strenuous hikes. Leisure hikes and scenic drives are our usual thing. I am interested in finding out if Fresno is a good choice to fly into or somewhere else better; and which of the other parks in the area is a must in our week's planning.

To get to Fresno, you will have to transfer at a larger airport. My suggestion is to fly to Las Vegas and maybe see Death Valley before taking a flight on Allegiant to Fresno.
Route 41 to the south entrance of Yosemite should be no problem for traffic. When you enter the south entrance, turn right and go to the Mariposa Grove first. Make sure to stop at the viewpoint immediately after coming out of the tunnel.
I'm sure you will enjoy. Allegiant has not posted the schedule past early August yet. Currently they are flying from LV to Fresno 4 days per week.
