Planning a trip on the east coast

My husband and I looking to travel for 4 or 5 nights in the late fall. I'm considering a stop at 2 or 3 different places to keep it interesting. I live in NJ, and would need to drive, but I'm willing to go up to 6 or 7 hours away. I'm accustomed to B&B's, but I may want something more luxurious. Must be places that have some interesting things to do, but not too much. We are trying to avoid the real big cities. Maybe even a night or two at a spa??

I know that this is vague, but any suggestions?
