places to stay in and around southern Utah's NP's

Please help with your comments about where to stay in and around southern Utah's NP's (Zion, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Arches, Monument Valley and Mesa Verde (in CO). Need two single beds (no B&B's probably). Cost appreciated.

Zion - lodge in park or a motel in Springdale - lots of motels in Springdale
Arches/Canyonlands - Moab - again lots of motels in Moab
Mesa Verde - lodge in park or a motel in Cortez, closest town to Mesa Verde.
Monument Valley - Gouldings Lodge which is less than 3 miles from the valley. If not available stay in Kayenta about 20 miles away. Holiday Inn in Kayenta or Wetherill Motel.
You didn't mention Bryce NP. A must since you will be in the area. Lodge in the park or Ruby's Best Western.

We have stayed in the following motels during So. Utah trips: 1)Arches - Best Western Canyonlands Inn in Moab. You can use Moab as your base for both Arches and Canyonlands. The BW Greenwell Inn is less costly (AAA: $89-129 for Canyonlands for 2P, $45-$129 for Greenwell, high season), but does not offer continental breakfast & rooms are not as nicely appointed- still serviceable, though. If you want to use another motel below Canyonlands, we've stayed at the Days Inn in Monticello- nothing fancy, but rooms clean & continental breakfast.
2) Capitol Reef - BW Capitol Reef Resort in Torrey. Nice place, great hot tub, laundry facilities- practically the first place you hit as you come into Torrey from the Park. AAA: $99-139 for 2P high season. Search this site for comments on Wonderland Inn- there's also a Days Inn and Super 8 in Torrey, don't know about them. 3) Monument Valley- for ease of getting to the site first thing in the a.m. before the traffic and dust kicks up, Gouldings is your best bet. Since it's the closest place, it stays booked. Kayenta is about 18 miles away; we have stayed at the BW Wetherill Inn at the junction of 163/160; it is serviceable. IMO, Kayenta is low on the charm factor. If you need to budget, scrimp in another location and stay at Gouldings for the handy location to the site. 4) Zion: we've stayed both trips at the Zion Lodge located in the park. We've been well pleased with our accommodations both times, one time in cabin, next time in the lodge building. The park shuttle which operates between Springdale and Zion is excellent, and it stops at all the major motels in Zion. Other posters to this site have praised Flanigan's in Springdale, and it appears nice from the exterior. There are other motel options in Moab, Torrey, Kayenta, and Springdale; we've just not used them. You will love this area; it is good for what ails.

ARCHES/CANYONLANDS (moab)- back in March we stayed at the Best Inn....clean, typical type accomedations w/ pool, hottub, washer/dryer in lobby area; microwave's (outside of rooms in hallway) refrigerators (inside rooms). this appears to be a new hotel....our room was upstairs w/ a window facing a wall in the back....no view but better than facing the road in front of hotel. typical free breakfast...donuts etc..
as i remember this is the closest hotel to arches/canyonlands enterance although the rest of the hotels are probably no more than a mile or 2 further away. best part....$50 per night.

theres also a motel 6 across from the best inn which looks like it was just built ...

places i stayed this fall:

zion: flanigan's, with nice restaurant, in springdale right next to the park.

canyonlands and arches: microtel in moab. typical microtel, new and clean. took tag-a-long jeep tour on schaffer trail and raft down the upper colorado.

capitol reef: chuck wagon lodge in torrey. nice log cabins and motel style lodge. capitol reef restaurant with fresh local food. sweet, tidy town.

bryce: ruby's extravaganza.

monument valley: goulding's lodge. go on all-day tour.

you did not mention when you are going. prices differ depending on time of year. this year prices were way down because of all the tours cancelling after sept. 11. give them a call or www.utah.com/lodging. all these accomodations were very good i thought.

absolutely marvellous country! don't miss the drive from torrey to bryce to zion.

For Zion, we love the Desert Pearl Inn in Springdale. Not real cheap, maybe $125 a night, but ask for a room overlooking the river at the back. Rooms are HUGE and have a fridge, sink, microwave & coffee maker.

If you want to stay within Bryce Canyon NP, the motel style rooms at Bryce Canyon Lodge are fine. Near the entrance to the park, Bryce Canyon Pines is an ok regular motel. The rooms are nothing great, but certainly acceptable value. Near Capitol Reef, I stayed at the Wonderland Inn. The rooms there are good, but not extra ordinary. Certainly clean and comfortable.
For Arches, take you pick of any of the standard motels in Moab.
I cannot comment on Zion because I have not stayed near there in a long time.
For Mesa Verde, any one of several motels in Cortez are ok. But Durango and the surrounding area are "resort priced".
