Places of Worship-NYC

Cousins from Spain will be visiting us next summer. We want to show them them the churches, temples, and synagouges. What are the more intresting or historic churches, temples, and synagouges in NYC. We are familiar with Trinity, St. Paul's, St. Pat's, and St.John the Divine.

Well, certainly the 2 Portugese Jewish cemetaries in the West Village.

I've always thought the church next to St. Francis Xavier school is beautiful - the one on 16th between 5th and 6th

Central Synagogue on Lex and 55th is also very beautiful inside - there are tours on Weds.

Grace Church on Broadway and 10th Street, which was designed by the designer of St. Patrick's and where PT Barnum had Gen. Tom Thumb marry Lavinia Warren in 1863.

Those are just a couple off the top of my head.

Oh - the beautiful Our Lady of Pompeii church on Bleecker and 6th and the Catholic church on 14th and 8th that has a huge percentage of the congregation that is Mexican - they have great street celebrations and wonderful homemade food after services on Sundays. A lot of vendors sell to the passersby.

Two of my favorites are St. Thomas Episcopal Church, very close to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Also, Temple Emanuel is quite beautiful. It's in the 60's on 5th Avenue, across from Central Park. I have been to Friday night services there. I think they give tours during the day.

Eldridge Street Synagogue has recently undergone a fabulous reonvation and is a must-see!

There are Moorish elements that will be familiar to your Spanish visitors.

Temple Emanuel is, I think, the largest synagogue in the world, and also has tours http://www.emanuelnyc.org/simple.php/about_contact_tour

Thanks again.

We will ask in advance if they want to see how Spanish culture influenced America. They are also from Galicia in Northwestern Spain where is little Moorish influence but a great Celtic influence. Bagpipes are the local traditional instrument.
