Place to Stay in San Diego for 1-2 Weeks

Planning on a trip (1-2 weeks) to San Diego in July with wife and 2 kids (3 and 5) but have no clue the best way to do it and make it affordable. Should I do a home rental, suites with kitchen (to avoid high dining costs) or cheap hotel (and eat out daily)? If it's too expensive, then I'd just stay 1 week, but I'd really like to stay 2 weeks and make it leisurely and relaxing, as opposed to hitting a ton of amusement activities in a few days and burning out on my vacation.

Any suggestions on the most affordable way to stay in San Diego for 5-14 days?

You need to tell us your budget before we can even start to give you 'affordable' recommendations.

Although we haven't used them in San Diego, we've had good luck other places renting apartments from vrbo and homeaway.

San Diego is spread out over a large area. Wherever you stay you will have to drive to attractions. I suggest you pick a neighborhood, such as Hillcrest, so you can walk to shops, restaurants, parks, etc. If you are going to be there for one or two weeks, you don't want to be stuck in a place with nothing of interest within walking distance.

Here is place to start:
go to Hotels.com & look for hotels in the Mission VAlley area as will be cheaper, centrally located, decent area w/shopping and inexpensive (for San Diego) restaurant options and cheapest without driving forever. (not beach but will be close 15 minute min..1/2 hr drive max).

I found this place..not lovely but has good rates in Mission Valley and has a 2 room suite w/microwave/refridge.

Also for Mission Valley, there are a number of Extended Stay type hotels...just Google San Diego Extended Stay Hotels.

If cheap is important then the above should help. If you can afford too I would rec this area as it too is centrally located and set up for families w/very close supermarket, restaurants, big grassy park area, lots of free parking and has Courtyard by MArriott w/2 room suite

Also has Homewood Suites by Hilton

VRBO.com and pick a place that is central, maybe an apt in the Gaslamp area?
