My wife and I are planning a week stay in the Williamsburg area and have decided to stay at the Extended StayAmerica hotel in Newport News. Has anyone stayed there before and is it nice? They quoted us a rate of $310 for 7 nights, and it is a room with full kitchen.

There are so many hotels in Williamsburg, why choose a place that's 30 miles away? Check out the Embassy Suites right in Williamsburg.
Jen, because it's $310 for 7 nights. you can't touch that rate in Williamsburg. The Embassy Suites is $ 189/nt.
Sorry Robert, I've only stayed at the Williamsburg Woodlands, which I highly recommend.
If you like good barbecue, try Pierces. Excellent BBQ, great prices.
My husband & I were just in Williamsburg and stayed at the Williamsburg Lodge. However, we weren't staying for 7 days. If there is a closer hotel that is also "frugal"
I would certainly recommend it. The drive back and forth each day would be tiring. However, if you plan to tour the Naval Base in Norfolk or take in the Virgina Beach area, that might be a more central location. It's brutally hot in Williamsburg now. Be sure to make reservations if you are planning to dine at one of the taverns.
Hi Robert,
There are two in Newport News. Which one are you staying in? Sorry to say I've never been in either but they're both located in commercial and business districts that get a lot of traffic. One is right off of the interstate. The area is just fine, certainly not seedy. You'll be surrounded by big box stores like Target and Circuit City, fast food and chain restaurants and the like.
You will be a good 25 miles from Williamsburg and traffic can be a bear on I64 both at am/pm rush hours and a random points during the day and evening. Recommend you familiarize yourself with Route 143 Jefferson Ave which runs west to Wmburg from Newport News.
Thanks for the advise everyone. I realize we will be a good 25 miles from Williamsburg, but the savings in the room rates I think will be worth it. Everything I could find in Williamsburg was sky high.
DDD, We will be staying at the one at 11708 Jefferson Ave. I realize that the traffic might be bothersome but I hope by being on vacation that i can plan my days around rush hour. Maybe the Jefferson Ave route will be a good choice. Is it 4 lane? Are there a lot of traffic lights on it?
Robert,
I agree. You can plan your trips to and from Wmburg to avoid the am/pm rush hours. But the interstate traffic can clog in a heart beat for construction, accidents, Busch Gardens, Friday to the beach, Sunday home from the beach. A real crap shoot. I64 is still two lanes each way up near Wmburg and the exits are not evenly spaced. A traffic burp could cost you half an hour of sitting on the highway.
Jeff. Ave/Rte 143 is good alternative for you all. Alas, it is all stop lights in Newport News. Four sometimes six lanes. Once you get to NN Park it narrows to 4 lanes but after the park, the speed picks up substantially till you get to Wmburg. (Don't exceed the limit in NN Park...big speed trap!)
A Hampton Roads map (Penninsula not South Side which is Norfolk/Va Beach) would be helpful.
If it were me, I'd stay closer to Wmburg because you're not going to want to make that trip more than once a day. I understand the financial considerations. You might look for some last minute deals in Wmburg as your dates approach.
Have fun. Let me know if I can be of further help.
Robert, Did you know you could stay at La Quinta Inn in Williamsburg for $87 a night? It includes breakfast too. Just a thought, it might be worth staying fewer nights but being centrally located. This way, it would be easier to take a dip in the pool in the afternoon and freshen up without having to go all the way back to the hotel and possibly back to Wmb. for dinner.
Robert - you have chosen the one near the interstate that DDD writes of .. but worse traffice will be towards your east, and since almost everyone on the "Peninsula" travels east in the morning and W in the evening, you'll usually be going the opposite direction. There's plenty of things to see in Newport News too. Stop at the tourism center on Rt 143 as you travel towards Williamsburg. You also could try Rt 60, but it will have more lights and traffic, and less 4 lane areas than 143. You got an excellent price, and I'd drive too for the difference. If looking for a diversion, rent a canoe or take a hike in Newport News Park, adjacent to the tourism office. Have a great trip.
Robert,
You should check out www.skyauction.com . They frequently have deals for places in Williamsburg that go for about $200 per week including taxes. Sometimes that's for a studio, sometimes for a 1 br. It depends on their inventory. Look at their website and do a search for Williamsburg.
The worst traffic you will probably face will be the intersection of Jefferson and 64. Jefferson has traffic and lights until Ft. Eustis and then its pretty clear after that. Rt 60 is another good alternative because it leads right to Busch Gardens. You can get to 60 by taking a left onto Denbigh Blvd from Jefferson. Another name for 60 is Warick Blvd in Newport News. It changes in Wmsbg. Someday when you have the time take Jefferson to Ft. Eustis Blvd. Right onto Ft. Eustis until it ends at Rt 17. Left onto 17 and take the Colonial Parkway to Jamestown.
