Pittsburgh Trip

Hi,
Going to Pittsburgh in early August. Looking for some restaurants to go to. Looking to stay in the downtown area or close to it. Looking for either a casual place or more formal dining.

Hi Gary,
I hope you get some responses. We were just in Pittsburgh in June and had a wonderful time, but we didn't eat downtown. We did enjoy visiting the Strip District, an open air market type thing with lots of delicious street- food possibilities. Hope you have a great time!

Two of my favorites are in the Strip: Kaya for a more casual latin/caribbean flavor, or Eleven for more upscale/creative. Great bar at both. Downtown Butcher and Rye is supposed to be cool as is Meat and Potatoes. Dish on the South Side is very cool with creative Italian.

Legume in Oakland, with it's buzzy bar called Butter Joint are very good.

Cure is maybe THE place to go.

I'm sorry I can't recommend any hotels as my daughter only lives 30 mins from Pittsburgh & we just drive over for the day & have never stayed there. I have friends who have stayed at the Sheraton, DoubleTree Downtown, & Hampton & were very happy with their choices & the location. The Wyndham often is featured on Travelzoo & Groupon with vouchers for great rates.

I put the Church Brew Works in this google map, then added Hotels.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...a.html#MAPVIEW

Hope it works. The hotels were blue dots.

Bookmarking.

I have been going to Carnegie, just a few miles out of Pittsburgh my whole life. However I have never been downtown. We are planning to stop in Pittsburgh on the way home from Philadelphia in the fall. I think that I am more excited to go to Pittsburgh than Philadelphia.

The Church Works looks like the church that my cousin got married in back in the 70's.

gardendiva, you are shocking me! Carnegie to center city Pittsburgh is just minutes away.

I once lived in Carnegie, on Anthony Street, a little street between Main St. and the Parkway. I have to say that it was the dirtiest place I've ever lived. After 18 months there, every picture on the wall was surrounded by black soot and my windowsills were impossible to clean. This was while Carnegie was still very industrial.

Another thing I know about Carnegie was how many Ukrainians lived there. Many of my high school friends were Ukrainians; we had reunions at the Ukes. I still go to Carnegie to buy Ukrainian perogies at a church. When I first walked in that church basement to make a purchase, I thought, "this smells like my childhood."

My oldest friend's company is headquartered in Carnegie.

I spent a lot of my life around Carnegie and it's people. Still do.

When you're next in Carnegie, come into Pittsburgh!

tuscanlifeedit, My father was born in Heidelberg. That might not be spelled correctly. When we came to visit we spent most of our time visiting relatives as my grandfather had 8 brothers and sisters. Our visit always had to include a Thursday so that my Dad could get perogi at the church. You most likely ate a few that his Aunt Mary made. It has been a few years since I have been to Carnegie. The last time we did come into Pittsburgh as my cousin had her wedding reception on a river boat. This year I will be making a stop in Pittsburgh on the way back from Philadelphia and maybe another trip to visit my Dad's only remaining aunt who will be 90 in November.

I fell totally in love with Pittsburgh on my first visit this summer. I have to admit I liked it more than Philadelphia.

Heidelberg: went to a little party there last year.

My biggest memory of Heidelberg is Wright's Seafood Inn. When I was growing up it was the place to go.

My friend's mom worked there and she once got us a giant bag of steamed crabs that we took to the drive-in. Can't imagine why we thought crabs were an OK food to eat in the car...
