Has anyone taken the cog railway to the top of Pike's Peak? Is it a must-do or is driving just as good?
Thanks,
Lynda

Trip Ideas

Lynda,
My wife and I did the cog railway several years ago and just loved it. I did not drive up so I can't compare. I have driven up several mountains and would not compare that experience to the cog. If you decide to do it, try and get the early train up. You will see lots more wildlife on the way.
Thanks, PlaceU2--That will work perfectly. I think we can arrive in Manitou Springs early enough the day before to see the cliff dwellings, then spend the night and do the railway early the next morning and then depart for home--another 3 days.

The Cog Railway was one of our highlights on our trip to Colorado several years ago. My kids remember it, and loved it! Be prepared to be a little short of breath at the top, though, both from the altitude, and the scenery!
lyntom,

We have done both several times and, belive me, for a first timer the Cog Railway is the way to go. The drive is interesting but can also be a little nerve-racking, depending on when you go.
Plus, as others pointed out, chances are you will see more wildlife from the train and no one will have to concentrate on the road, thereby missing the spectacular scenery.
You'll enjoy the railway.

We took the Cog Railroad to the top of Pike's Peak last July. We enjoyed it. Round trip it takes several hours. They only accept cash or traveler's checks for payment. We went on a July afternoon. When we got to the top it was snowing heavily and lightning. I personally would be hesitant to drive because of the variable weather condition. If I remember correctly it's a dirt road part of the way. The scenery up the mountain was pretty, but we didn't see much at the top due to the weather. The temperature at the top came be 30 or 40 degrees lower than at the bottom. The other activity we enjoyed in the area was the Colorado Springs Zoo. It's has a great Giraffe exhibit.
Definitely take the cog railway, and definitely dress for cool/cold weather, no matter what the temperature is below.
We went when I was a child, and it's one of my most vivid vacation memories. Of course, that's partially because ... my mother fainted when we were at the top ... very uncharacteristic of her. So, that's one argument for not driving! I also remember how cold it was at the top b/c it was definitely summer down at the base.
We drove and if I were to go again, I would take the Cog. The drive was ok until we got above the treeline - dirt road in the sleet, no guardrails. We all spent way more time looking at the road than the scenery - LOL!!!
Wallacefl must have been on the same train as my family last July, as we also experienced snow and lightning. Because of the weather conditions, those who drove to the top had to wait for a ranger to follow on the drive down. We absolutely enjoyed the cog train and it was nice being able to appreciate the scenery without worrying about driving off the road. By the way, they did accept credit cards.
Our whole family loved the train, especially the kids. There is a snack bar and gift shop so you can buy/mail a post card (unless things have changed - it's been a few years). Iwould hate to drive and miss looking around. the views are terrific, and yes, it is COLD up there!
We drove up and loved doing the drive--plus it's a lot cheaper. We didn't want to take all day doing it either. Once you are on top, it only takes a short while to take it all in. There isn't anything to do up there but look around, buy some souvenirs and then you're ready to go.
We had great weather and views at the top but it is definitely chilly.
The snack bar actually has more than snacks which is good since it's the only choice you have.
We drove and I didn't feel any fear. I'd like to try the cog sometime. It seems kind of pricey though. When I went up it was 100 plus degrees at the bottom and hailing on top. 14,000 feet will shock you when you try to dash across the parking lot!
