We are taking an Alaskan cruise out of Vancouver in Sept. We plan to fly into Seattle with an early morning arrival the day before the cruise and take the Amtrak to Vancouver. Can anyone tell me if we arrive in Seattle mid-day how long Pike's Place Market is open? The website doesn't give hours. I know the restaurants are open into the evening, but I'd like to see it at its liveliest. Also, any good hotel recommendations would be appreciated. I'd like to be close to as much as possible so we can see as much as possible. We are a younger couple, but do not like the really trendy hotels like the W. Something more classic would be great.
Thank you!!

We spent 1 night at Inn at the Market and it was lovely. Also spent 4 nights at the Alexis which was also really nice. Inn at Market is right at Pike Mkt...Alexis is a short walk from mkt. The market seemed to be busy most of the day, mornings were especially busy as all the vendors were setting up and getting in fresh produce etc.
Hope this helps...

Most of the food and craft stalls shut down around 5-6pm. It's extremely busy at lunchtime and into the early afternoon.
Alexis is a good choice, but any of the major downtown hotels will be fine and easily accessible to the market.
The Marriott at the foot of the Pike Hillclimb is also convenient. It's across the street from the Seattle cruise terminal.
You are aware that the train to Vancouver departs at 7:45 am, right?
HI..
We stayed at the Hotel Andra right in the heart of the City and about 4-5 blocks to Pikes Market and even though the staff seemed more important than the guests, it was a great place to stay and it houses a great famous restaurant called Lola's which is a Tom Douglas owned and we loved going to Pikes before lunch and watched the surly fisherman that throw the fish that you always see..it is a riot to people watch and the flowers are gorgeous everywhere and there is a dinette that serves the best chowder and fish sandwiches that are out of this world and it is right near the fish throwing guys and then we grabbed a pint upstairs at some classic restaurant but forgot the name..
I used Expedia.com but I am sure you can get some great deals in September.
Have a wonderful time..
The Market opens early morning and most places close up around 5/6pm.

...I'd second the suggestion of each of those hotels and add: The Mayflower Park Hotel since you mention "classic". It's the oldest continually operating hotel in Seattle.
Thank You!! I think Inn at the Market might be the one. I've been looking at some today like Edgewater and Hotel Monaco, but this one sounds like what I'm looking for in terms of being at the center of the action we want to experience.
As for the train... yep, I understand it is 7:45 AM. The one thing I'm not sure of is where the Amtrak station is in Seattle. I know we'll have to take a cab, but I don't know how long it will take. I've chosen the train because people have written that it is the most scenic way to go between the cities if you can't go by boat. Plus, the early departure will help us get to the ship at a decent hour.
Thanks again!!
Hmmm there are no rooms available at the Inn at the Market for when we'll be there.
I will look into the other options.
The Amtrak station is right downtown, at Third and King,in the Pioneer Square area. If you could get a room at the Alexis on First Ave., it would be a 10-minute walk (about 10 blocks).
I would suggest taking a cab, even from the Alexis. Pioneer Park can be a bit sketchy that early in the morning. And the walk from Alexis to market is only 5 minutes.
We bought french bread, cheese, prime rib jerky [had never had any jerky before..ick..but this was great], fresh basil, big juicy ripe tomatoes and peaches and had a picnic lunch after visiting the market. I can still smell the basil! You can take this on the train and have a nice meal.
We took the train to and from Vancouver. It was a nice ride. They do have a dining car and the food was ok.
Hope this helps...

Last August we stayed at the Hotel Vintage Park. Its right downtown and w/i easy walking distance of Pikes market. We enjoyed it very much.

As mentioned, the train station is at the south end of downtown in Pioneer Square. It would be a very short (5 mins.) and not expensive cab ride ($5-7?). I would have your hotel give you a wake up call and phone for a taxi for you.
Debi's idea for a Market picnic for the train is a great one!
Are there any larger hotels like a Hyatt or Hilton you can recommend? For some reason there is no availability at most of the hotels that have been recommended. I'm wondering if we might have to rent a car and stay somewhere outside of the city and drive to Vancouver instead of taking the train... hmm
Sure, there's the:
Grand Hyatt
Sheraton
Westin
Warwick
Best western Pioneer square.Paul
Have you tried the Seattle Supersaver site for your dates? It's run by the Seattle visitor's bureau and will give you a good overall idea of which hotels are available.
I don't know what your budget is, but in addition to the hotels that have been mentioned, you might want to consider the Fairmont Olympic since you say you like "classic".
