Piedra Blancas elephant seal rookery visiting hours

Hi,

I am unable to find information on the visiting hours for the rookery at Piedra Blancas. Can anyone give me this information?

We are travelling in May.

Thanks

www.elephantseal.org is the website of the docents. I don't know that there are really "hours" but if there are it should be somewhere on the site, which has updated news reports.

I'm pretty sure you can just pull right up and check them out. They are right off of the highway.
I took a group of students down there a couple of years ago in May to see them and they were VERY active.

Yep - they are right off the highway, so any time during daylight hours is fine. You basically pull into a large turn out, park the car, and look at the elephant seals from a small bluff overlooking the beach. I have seen people wandering around ON the beach in and amongst the elephant seals, but that isn't the brightest idea - LOL.

One time, I saw a mother seal lash out at some guy who was wandering between the seals - caught his pant leg in her teeth and tore it. Fortunately for him, she didn't get his leg because I think she could have really done some damage. Hopefully he learned that wandering around near wild animals isn't the best idea - LOL.

Wandering among the elephant seals is not only a stupid idea, it's illegal. These are protected animals in a protected area.

There is now a boardwalk and a fence separating the public from the main resting area. As well as the docents are present most of the time.
