My daughter and I met Matt, the owner of www.deserthighlights.com, two years ago in Moab. He does a limited number of trips in Oregon each year. He discovered this canyon himself in 2005 and has only been down it 7 or 8 times. It would be highly unlikely that anyone else, other than people that he has taken(about 20), has ever seen this gorge before. The final rappel is 150-175 feet. It really isn't that scary. Probably safer than climbing a ladder. He brought along another one of his guides from Moab. So it was just the two of us and two guides. I couldn't talk my wife into doing this one.

Great shots!!!
Not for me.
The photos are wonderful. BUT SCAAARRRYYYYYY
Yikes! What was it like to be in that waterfall?
A Big Rush, no pun intended.
wow- What part of Oregon are you in? (I live in Oregon) I have no intention of trying that though
It was east of Detroit Lake about 20 or 30 minutes, then another 15 minute drive up a windy dirt road in the mountains. Not exactly sure where we were at. lol. very isolated. We turned by a cafe called Marion Forks, the restaurant was closed. It would be virtually impossible to see any of this without rappelling into it. Honestly, it really wasn't that big of a deal at all. I had done it with the same people in Moab, but just not in water. It doesn't show up in the pictures, but one waterfall had hundreds of mini rainbows.
spirobulldog--That is actually a really popular area. I know exactly where you were
Looks like a lot of fun!
Wow! Your photos are awesome. My husband and I repelled down a waterfall in Costa Rica in March (dry season) and the flow of the water was nowhere near what you experienced! We're impressed.
rpowell,
If you are ever in Moab, definately check out desert highlights. he does one waterfall canyon there(although, he tells me it is super cold, but he provides drysuits)along with 20 or 30 other awesome canyoneering hikes(slightly wet on some). I am definately going again sometime. He just does this in Oregon one or two weeks each year and the rest of the time he is in Moab, he has 3 or 4 guides in Moab. He is usually just looking for waterfalls in Oregon, but he does have permits for a couple of places like the photos we were in. My daughter really liked it, I must admit the final rap kinda scared me. If you haven't ever hiked in The Columbia River Gorge, we thought it was pretty amazing as well. We didn't make it to Silver Falls State Park, but it looked awesome.
