To where are you arriving, or where are you planning to buy the Sim? What kind of a phone do you have?

I'm not a phone expert, but this might point you to the questions you need to answer:

You should first find out if your foreign phone will work in the US at all--the US uses different bands(?) then most other countries.

Because US phones were sold locked until fairly recently, SIM cards are not as common here.

I spend a lot of time in the US. As Elberko says, check if your phone will work in the US (I'm Canadian and had major frustration once when a new phone wouldn't work over the border). The easiest solution has been to buy a US travel pack from my provider. It is relatively cheap and gives unlimited calling and messaging to Canada and within the US. Perhaps you could get something similar from your provider.

as elberko stated, we (99.99% of us) here in the US do not buy SIM cards - we buy phones that already have a card in them and are tied to one company's network.

I have seen both prepaid phones and SIM cards available in drugstores & discount stores like Dollar General & Family Dollar, as well as Walmart.

If your first stop is NYC, I would look at what the drugstore chain Duane Reade (part of the Walgreens co) offers. There are Duane Reade stores all over the place -not hard to find one within 5min walk of nearly anywhere in Manhattan.

If your first stop is somewhere like Teaneck NJ then look at a CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens drug store, or one of the other stores I listed above.

Here's an example of a SIM that works on ATT network from Walgreens (Duane Reade)

For an iphone 6s you will need a either micro or nano SIM - not a standard sized SIM card.

You need to ask you carrier what to do to use your phone in the US and they will give you some options.

I just did that with my Galaxy 5 iPhone. I ended up getting a plan for $10 a day charge which allowed me unlimited phone use and Internet.
