Phoenix - last leg of itin, sights/hotel question

3 of us will be arriving (for our first Arizona visit) in Phoenix, May 6th. Upon arrival, we will be driving to Sedona for 2 days, then Grand Canyon for 2 days and driving back to Phoenix Tues May 10th. We will be flying out of Phoenix Wed May 11th at 10:30am. My question, is there a hotel close to 17, where we could get a quick taste of Phoenix (and a good dinner)? Timewise, it will all depend on how many sightseeing stops we make on the way back from Grand Canyon (going east on 180). Maybe we should head straight for a hotel by the airport and not bother trying to see anything in Phoenix? Thanks in advance for your input!

Staying on I-17 will not give you an idea of Phoenix, it has just the run of the mill chain motels......you might go further into town from the I-17 on the Camelback Road exit and go to 25th St. and stay at the Embassy Suites Biltmore......from there you could go east to Scottsdale, north to AZ. Biltmore Hotel/Resort, gorgeous residential areas or south to downtown Phoenix.....there are also loads of restaurants in the area and the concierge can direct you to the sites you might have time to see.

I would absolutely agree. Spend the extra 30 minutes max in the car and drive to Scottsdale (you can take the 101 from I-17, go east) or stay along camelback road. My preference would be Scottsdale, but either would be better than I-17. Great restauarant for your last night is Los Sombreros which is a reasonable 15 minute drive from either of those locations. Enjoy your trip.

Attempt to find a hotel around 24th Street (not Avenue) and Camelback; Biltmore area. You'll be in the heart of "scenic Phoenix and when it is time to go to the airport only 15-20 minutes away (depending on traffic). There are plenty of restaurants in the Biltmore complex. Save room for dessert at a little french cafe on the south east corner called Petit Fore(sp).

Thank you so much for your responses, they sound exactly like what we're looking for. Especially the dessert part...my motto is "Life is uncertain, eat dessert first".
