Philly to Northeast Kingdon, Vermont - best route with best sites?
We are going to Lyndonville, Vermont with our four kids. Thru mapquest and yahoo maps, I have seen two ways to go from Philly. One is (basically) I-95 to I-91. The other is 78 to 287 to 87 to Mass Turnpike, NY Thruway to I-90 to I-91.
Any thoughts on the best route? One with interesting things to do on the way - with kids, ages 3, 7, 10, 13? Anything out of the way (no more than a couple of hours) that shouldn't be missed? We'd like to tack a night or two on before and after and can't find anything that "wows" us. Not interested in science/history museums.
Thanks!
Lisa

How about the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA? Just across the river in Agawam is Six Flags NEw England Amusement Park. In Woodstock, VT is the Billings Farm. You could spend a night on the way or on the way back in Stowe, VT - check out Ben & Jerry's, Cold Hollow, bike/walk/blade on the bike path, take the gondola up Mount Mansfield then hike to the summit from there.

There is also Northfield Mountain Recreation Center, on the Mass/Vt border just off of I-91. Canoes, kayaks, hikes, and riverboat cruises. It would be a nice place to stop for a picnic.
There is a third route to consider: cross the Tappan Zee and take the Wilbur Cross in CT)/Merrit Parkway (in NY) (it has two names in different parts) to I-91. It is very pleasant and tree-lined, with no trucks allowed, but does not react well to congestion.
Our strategy is, when we hit the NYC area, to tune to WCBS 880 on the radio. If the traffic report says the Merrit Parkway is bad, we take 287/87 to 91. Otherwise we enjoy the Parkway.
