Philadelphia trip

We are going to fly to Philadelphia and staying at 4th and Arch. Therefore we won't have any transportation while we're there. Any suggestions how we can see the historic sites in three days without a car? Are there tour buses?
Also, are there any good restaurants in that area? Appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Hi Lydell,
You will be just a matter of blocks from the Historic sights and many excellent restaurants. We stayed very close to where you will be and we never used the car all weekend. Philadelphia is a very easy city to get around by walking, and so much to see!
If you do a text search for Philadelphia Restaurants, you will read a very good list of places to eat..
My favorites were Fork, Friday Saturday and Sunday, a pub called the Plough and Star, and lunch at the Continental.
Your problem won't be where to eat but which great place to choose from

Scarlett,
Thank you so much for your quick reply.

I will do a text search.

Not knowing, I thought maybe the Fork, which I have heard of from others on this forum, was too far from where we will be staying.

You can also take the city busses. I think the fare is $1.50 one way. You could head down to the waterfront on the bus, walk around South Street, etc. I ended up using public transit when I parked my car near the waterfront, and didn't feel like walking 19 blocks to go shopping on Rittenhouse Square! Not a bad experience, at all.

You are walking distance to Old City where you will find Fork, Buddakan, Continental, and so many more wonderful dining options. I highly suggest making reservations ahead of time- especially at Buddakan. You should also know, you are only like a $5 or $6 taxi ride to Restaurant Row/ Rittenhouse Square area, which you should check out for shopping and dining- have lunch at Rouge overlooking the park. Philly is pretty small, and as long as you stay in center city, everywhere is an inexpensive taxi ride away.

No need to go to Rittenhouse Square for restaurant row because Market Street between Front and 4th Streets is its own restaurant row and you are one block away. The Fork has gone downhill recently. On Market Street there's also Pizzicato for Italian, Anjou for Japanese/Korean (less expensive & less noisy than Buddakan but not as striking to look at), Campo's for a South Philly-style luncheonette with fabulous food, and the Plough and the Stars for pub & Irish. The Iron Chef's restaurant, Morimoto, is a few blocks away on 7th & Chestnut, and the Omni Hotel on 4th & Chestnut has an excellent Sunday brunch. Sassafras is a terrific grocery story right on your block, too. You will not need a tour bus or car. You are right next door to Ben Franklin's grave and a block or two from Independence Hall, the new Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell, etc.

Bus fare is actually $2 each way - exact change. There are also trolleys which cost about $10 (depending on your haggling skills), which you can hop on and off all day and give you a good overview of the main sites in the city. And let's not forget the recent addition of the "ducks", which can be seen quacking their way all over that part of town, and then into the water.

I found out Blue and Green has moved to 7th and Sansom -- just when I really, really needed a spinach/romaine/bacon/bleu cheese salad.

There are probably only five cities in the U.S. that a car is completely unnecessary for visiting; Philadelphia is one of them. Indeed, if all you want is historical sites and restaurants, a car is major inconvenience. You can see all of the above with walking alone.

If you want to get a little further away from Center City, check out:

For buses & subway, buying tokens in 2-packs, 5-packs, or 10-packs brings cost down from $2 to $1.30. Available at 2nd & 5th Street subway stations and at the 6th Street visitors center (as well as many other locations).

I agree with all the recommendations for Fork and The Philadelphia Fish and Company. I've had WONDERFUL meals at both of these restaurants within the last couple months.
If you are planning to visit the Constitution Center leave yourself at least three hours to do that. Friends of mine who have visited said they could have spent the whole day exploring there.

Part of what made Fork so great for us was not just the great food but the service. Our waiter was amazing and fun, the owners wife came to the table to chat, we were made to feel welcome and like regulars, although it was our first time there. I highly recommend it ~
