I am taking my family to a phillies game at veteran's stadium. We have never been to Philadelphia before and wonder if the neighborhood around/near the stadium is safe. If it is ok can anyone recommend a place to stay near there?

We have been down to the stadium several times. The area around there is not very nice. We once stayed in a round hotel within walking distance, but were discouraged from actually walking to the stadium by the hotel staff.
We have also stayed at the Embbassy Suites by the airport. It is clean and very nice, but they made us sign a waiver that we would not use illegal drugs in our room (hmm...).
I have been told that the Sheraton Inn Society Hill is THE place to stay by one of the stadium attendants. Supposedly, that is where the visiting teams often stay, especially the Braves.

Going to the game is perfectly safe, but I wouldn't choose that area to stay.
If you stay anywhere along or near Broad St., the subway takes you right to the game. There is a Courtyard by Marriott near City Hall that is supposed to be very good.
Broad St. south of City Hall is near many good places to see and walk, such as our fabulous Reading Terminal Market at 12th and Arch Sts (not open Sunday, great for lunch.)

The Double Tree at Broad & Locust in Center City is very nice. The staff was great and they give you really good cookies when you check in From there you can take the subway to the stadium and save yourself from being ripped off trying to park - which is at a premium with 2 new stadiums under contruction near by. Plus, you're within walking distance of a lot of great historical sites. Enjoy your stay in my hometown!

I wouldn't even call the area around the stadium a "neighborhood". (Not like the old days at Connie Mack . . . anybody remember that fine old park?) I'm just chiming in to agree with rbs360 that the Sheraton Society Hill is very nice.

No, I would not stay by the stadium. There a lots of nice and moderatle priced hotels in Center City about a 10 -15 minute subway ride from the stadium on the Broad Sreet line. Look into the Doubletree, Radisson, and Courtyard by Marriott for moderately priced accomodations close to the subway.

I have booked two rooms at the Best Western Independnece Park Hotel; I know its not as close to the stadium as the hotels on Broad St. but it looked charming and I read a lot of good things about it. Since we are renting a car anyways we will just drive to the stadium. Is there parking available or should we take the subway?

I would take the suway instead as the traffic and parking can be a pain.

Take the Market/Frankford Line westbound to 15th St. and transfer to the Broad St. Line southbound to Pattison Avenue (end of the line) and the stadium is right there.
