Philadelphia PA: Safe Place/Watched Lot to Leave Car Near NYC Bus Depot

I wish to leave my vehicle for 24 hours in Philly overnight & take a cheap bus to New York City. I am barely familiar with Philly. I seek a 24-hour watched parking lot or a safe place to park for 24 hours, dropping it off 6pm-7:30 pm. I am willing to pay. My vehicle contains furniture that I do not want to lose. Can you recommend a watched lot or some other safe spot near a " To New York City" bus stop/depot? North Philly around Southampton Blvd & US1 (Roosevelt Blvd) would be a great plus. I am OK w/ Peter Pan bus & Chinatown bus. Also, can you recommend a bus line to take?

Just so you know, Peter Pan in Philly is operated as part of the Greyhound chain.

If you make an online reservation three or more days in advance, and choose the exact times you wish to ride in both directions, you can ride Greyhound for pretty much the same price as other bus lines. You are then an "Express" traveler, and can wait for your bus inside the terminal, in an area set aside solely for such riders; as well as board the bus before anyone else. Greyhound buses have 110V outlets and free wifi, and their Express buses go non-stop between Philly and NYC Bus Terminal. You might ride a Peter Pan Bus, but you'll be paying Greyhound and waiting at their station.

You will have to print out your tickets after completing your reservation from your computer.

The Greyhound Terminal is at 10th and Filbert, one block north of Market, and right across the street from the stairs to Jefferson Septa Station. This station is connected to the 11th Street Station of the Market-Frankford Subway Line (aka "Blue" Line, or MFL). You can thus park your vehicle pretty much anywhere along Market Street, and either walk to the Greyhound Terminal, or ride the MFL to 11th Street Station and then walk up to (almost) the Greyhound door.

The Greyhound Terminal is not the most pleasant place to wait for a bus; but waiting outside, with no place to sit and no access to bathrooms, and being forced to maintain your spot in line, is even less pleasant.

I am most grateful for your reply. I gain great help with this info. I imagine I can tolerate waiting in the greyhound terminal. Would you be able to say whether Market St. is a busy enough & safe enough street at all hours to leave my vehicle parked along Market with a negligible risk of break-in? Would be on a weekend.

Easy answer: no.
Market Street is the main street from the Delaware River to almost 70th Street, but it is NOT a place to leave a car for 24 hours. Parking is only permitted for a few hours on this street, and parking rules are RIGOROUSLY enforced. By the time you get to a place where there are no parking meters (about 50th Street), you do NOT want to park your car there for even a couple of hours.

There are several parking garages in downtown Philly
http://www.philapark.org/locator/
and, even though none of them can be considered 100% safe (heck, even your own garage isn't _100%_ safe), they would be better than parking on the street or in an open lot. I can't recommend one over the other. Just check to be certain that a place you choose permits overnight parking; some don't.

When you add the parking fee to the cheap bus fare are you still less than an Amtrak train (Northeast Regional)?
The fare from 30th St (PHL) is $55 each way.
If you drive to Trenton it is $44 each way.
I hope you don't encounter a blizzard while riding a bus.

Tom, you are aware that you have to pay for parking whether you ride a bus or a train?

Round trip between Philly and NYC--
Take Amtrak: $110 (your number)
Take Greyhound next week: $19 (just checked on Greyhound.com)

24 hour parking, next to 30th Street Amtrak Station: $42
24 hour parking, two blocks from Greyhound: $35

I MUCH prefer riding Amtrak over Greyhound between these two cities. I just value an extra $91 in spending money even more than the comfort of Amtrak.

Another bus option is Megabus, leaving from either 30th Street or 6th and Market streets. There would be indoor parking available near either place. (PaulRabe gave you the excellent link above for the parking locator.)

I'm not really sure if I understand what you need to do, but I did want to let you know that Southampton and Roosevelt Blvd. is not considered North Philly (at all!) and is definitely more of a car area than a bus one. You will be traveling a bit of a distance from there to get to a New York bus. If we had a little more detail about why you would be approaching your New York trip this way we might have some more apt suggestions?

My sister lives near Southampton Rd. and Roosevelt Blvd. That is the Far Northeast section of Philadelphia which is no where near North Philadelphia. You are not near center city or the bus terminals if that is really where you are starting. You are actually not too far from the Trenton or Hamilton station for the NJT train to New York which is not expensive and, in my opinion, a better option than a bus.
