Philadelphia

Staying at the Residence Inn near the airport to attend Phillies games. We will not have a car so need advice about getting to and from ball park and city sights from hotel.

The time I went to Philly, we used a cab to the ballpark from the City Center and walked everywhere else. There is also a subway but not sure how close to your hotel it runs.

I've stayed at that Residence Inn. They have a shuttle (or did when I last stayed there) that will take you to the airport or to a nearby Septa (public transit) station. I'd probably just call the hotel front desk directly and ask them what's the best way, without a car, to get to/from the stadium (which is served by a subway line at very least - see the Septa website for details). It must be a common question at the hotel. Maybe there's a simply Septa connection but maybe not.

www.septa.org There's a bus and subway combo to get to Lincoln Financial Field; takes about a half hour from the looks of things. You wouldn't be on the subway for very long.
For going into center city for the sites and sights, you could get the airport shuttle and catch the R1 Septa regional rail line into town; bit more pleasant than the bus, albeit a bit more expensive as well. The Septa site has a "plan your trip" section (now located on the left side) that will give you routes and times for whatever day you need.

Are you accustomed to using public transportation? Septa's not all that complicated, but it is definitely urban transport! (I use it all the time, by the way.)

Thanks...we will definitely check with hotel about shuttle service. Great suggestions. Thinking we will do just fine with public transportation as we have done it well in NYC and Boston.

More specific info on getting to Citizens Bank (where the Phillies play) via Septa -- it's pretty straitforward.

The Broad Street Line -- aka "Orange Line" is a north-south subway running along (surprise!) Broad Street. The most southern stop -- Pattison -- is where you get off for all of the sports complex, including "the ballpark."

You can take the R1 Regional Rail from the airport area, getting off at Surburban Station (NOT 30th Street).

www.septa.org/maps/region/pdf/ccp.pdf
From there just follow the signs to the Orange Line, buy your tokens at any Septa vending machine ($2.90 for two, cash ONLY), ride south to Pattison, and then follow the sea of red to the ballpark. Riding the subway will save you time, money, and aggravation.
