Are you asking about visiting the Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor?
If so, than yes, you can do it on your own.
And, yes, if you are staying in Waikiki you can take the #20 or #42 city bus to the Arizona Memorial. FYI - From the Arizona Memorial you can take a short shuttle bus ride to the USS Missouri - if I recall correctly that shuttle is free.
There are also a number of private companies that run reasonably priced shuttle buses to the Arizona Memorial from several of Waikiki's hotels. Google "Bus service from Honolulu to Pearl Harbor" for lots of links.

I was moved by the Arizona visit...remembering as a teen hearing that fateful Dec. 7. Just standing at the site. A recent book provided more info on the Pacific theater of war. This is a process of landings and fighting up the island chain toward Japan...Killing the Rising Sun, by Bill O'Reilly. Seems the European theater was more widely reported.
You should of course also visit the National Memorial Cemetery (Punch Bowl) up Puowaina Dr. This is sacred to many whose fighting families lie buried. Quite a scenic view.

There are no commercial guided tours of any of the four Pearl Harbor museums. If you were to take a commercial tour, all they do is drop you off at the Visitors Center. Commercial tours do provide tickets for USS Arizona Memorial.
You can make advanced reservations for USS Arizona Memorial (or for all four Pearl Harbor museums):
http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...ial-policy.cfm
As others have said, just take The Bus (#20 or #42 will get you from Waikiki to the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center with no need to transfer to a different route).
But you should consider renting a car while you are on Oahu. You have a chance to get out & see Oahu & spend quality time on many of the best beaches in Hawaii.

"You can do all of the above. Basically comes down to how much of stress do you want to go through on your vacation to get to Pearl Harbor. The less you pay the more stress."
Pretty sad for an obvious commercial!
No need to take an expensive commercial tour that only drops you off at the Pearl Harbor & waits for the official USS U.S. Navy/NPS official tour to end to collect their customers.
Absolutely no stress to make your own advanced reservations for USS Arizona Memorial!
Absolutely no stress to just show up at the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center at 7am to get any of the 1300 tickets that are available for walk-ups if you can't make advanced reservations!
No way would I ever book USS Arizona Memorial tickets through a commercial tour especially as sad as this company is! What total fear mongering!

We just returned from our first visit to Hawai'i. We took the #42 bus to Pearl Harbor and it was easy. It is however a bit long from Waikiki, almost an hour on the bus, but for the price it's hard to beat.

There are shuttles that go from Waikiki to Pearl Harbor -- $18 roundtrip per person and it's faster than a bus making stops and less walking. http://reliableshuttle.com/chargeaz.html
I sent this link to my brother but he ended up paying a company $90 per person to drive them to Pearl Harbor. Once there, the tours are ALL guided by workers in the museum/memorial. I have no idea what my brother got out of $180 besides an expensive ride?

Perhaps a circle island tour along with USS Arizona Memorial?
Perhaps some or all of the other three Pearl Harbor museums? These charge admission!

I am going with a friend on December 2 for USS Arizona Memorial tour. About the 10th time for me. She has never been to Hawaii.
Also going back on December 7 to meet & greet the Pearl Harbor survivors that will be there and for the ceremony at USS Oklahoma Memorial Ceremony!

Yes, they did see the three other museums -- are those admission fees not subsidized like the Arizona Memorial?

USS Arizona Memorial is part of the National Park Service (NPS). USS Arizona Memorial is part of World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. Admission is free ($1.50 each for advanced reservations).
Each of the other three Pearl Harbor museums were added much later and are privately owned museums, (though still in Pearl Harbor and on U.S. Navy property). Each has their own admission. About $15 for USS Bowfin! About $25 for each of USS Missouri & for Pacific Aviation Museum.
So $90 pp is not out of line for all four Pearl Harbor museums if it included transportation from Waikiki & back.
One could do a little better by taking The Bus or with a car rental.
