eurotraveller~ I agree.. last spring, I was routed through there on a return leg to Anchorage from San Jose..

the variety of interesting shops, combined with very nice places to eat(the one restaurant past security on the left at the end(lol) is a treasure, terrific food and quiet, plus book stores and such.. first class.

I had thought they did a nice job refurbishing the SeaTac airport, but Portland definitely takes top prize for West Coast anyway.

As an added bonus, we watched F-15's take off and land for a couple hours, so the kids and I were all happy with our layover that evening.

We also took the light rail into downtown which was super easy and relaxing, shopped for awhile, then headed back.. it was perfect. J.

Thanks eurotraveller for posting this!
The people that work at the airport are generally friendly and nice too, not so harrassed and abrupt as some other airports ..

Hi eurotraveller, I am another fan of PDX. Even when I was stuck there for hours (due to Alaska using the plane I was suppose to fly home on for the passengers going to Las Vegas) I thought to myself "well at least I am stuck at PDX". Had a good dinner, some great wine and did some shopping. And I agree with Scarlett, the employees at PDX always seems quite pleasant.

I was there in August and I was pleasantly surprised at what a nice airport PDX is. I hope to see it again someday.

Yes, we are lucky here

Jetset--Having PANG right next to the airport is nice. We have friends that come visit and one flies into PDX and the other into PANG and so appreciate them being next door to each other.

Amazingly enough, it keeps getting better! Every time I fly I am delighted to discover a new little addition to PDX.

I can hop on a bus to catch the MAX and I can get to the Airport using public transport and I live in SW Portland. Very convenient!

I like PDX ok, but I do not find it head and shoulders better than other airports. Bad airports like Logan stand out. PDX is also the only airport I have visited where a dildo sat disgarded on the floor of the terminal as people walked right by without anyone batting an eyelash. My favorite airports tend to be smaller, as in Sarasota (love the aquarium) or Syracuse. These won't receive lots of votes as they aren't so busy.

PDX is definitely a treat! Great relaxing atmosphere, pleasant decor, and that great free WI-FI, so if you get stuck in the airport, you can at least catch up with your e-mail and check out Fodors message board.

Why can't other airports create the same kind of ambience?

Binthair, so,someone lost a dildo so that makes the airport unfavorable? So sorry you couldn't see the forest for the trees, so to speak.

I rate airports by the ease of gettting to and from, the quality and affordability of the restaurants and the decor of the entire airport.

I fly for business as well as pleasure many times a year and, as far as large airports go, Portland is my favorite!
