Patti Lupone, Christine Ebersole in Chicago thru 8/21
Hi, Fodorites.
If anyone's coming to Chicago, and looking for a musical, try to catch WAR PAINT at the Goodman Theatre.
The musical has huge talent behind it... hopefully the musical will be able to transfer to New York.
Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole star, in a world premier musical by librettist Doug Wright (Grey Gardens, I Am My Own Wife, The Little Mermaid); composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie (Grey Gardens, Far From Heaven); and director Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, If/Then and Grey Gardens).
It's all very solid and enjoyable, though the first act didn't have as many memorable musical numbers. The 2nd act was fantastic. Throughout, Lupone and Ebersole are stellar. Such talents.
Story is fascinating, based on the cosmetic mavens behind the brands of Helene Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. I saw a book in the gift shop, and want to read it now. The women sound fascinating.
Shows are nearly sold out, and as the end of run nears, will be hard to get. Try to book early if you're interested.

I agree, abram, on your first 3 points. I saw the show a few days ago. Pacing was very good, though I didn't find any songs in the first act all that memorable. I wonder if they did any "fixing" in the past month, or if they stopped after opening night.
I know at Steppenwolf, they'll continue to correct a show until opening night.
Still, a great show.

Good lord you gave me a heart attack. I thought you were announcing that Patti Lupone was doing the musical "Chicago" I still haven't recovered from Ann Renkin stepping in it far past her prime. Some things you can't unsee.
Glad the show sounds fabulous. Patti will get it to Broadway!
