Park City, HELP - UT/Maui w/4 year old (Jan trip)
I won a company trip to Maui in Jan. We initially planned to break up the flight coming and going thru CA. We're using vacation points with our timeshare company and were unable to layover anywhere in CA. We ended up with a ski week in Park City, UT and then off to Maui for 5 days at the Ritz.
We're traveling with our very active 4 year old son. He goes everywhere with us - he's a type 1 diabetic and we don't have anyone who could help with shots, etc.
Concerned about how to pack for such a diverse trip with such a young child. I tend to overpack. I've started getting most of our basic winter outerwear. We're Floridians so have very few of the winter essentials. It all is so bulky!!
I was thinking of packing our ski stuff in a shipping box and checking it on the flight out to UT then shipping it back home.
Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks for your help!

Shipping the ski clothes sounds like a good idea to me. Another idea is to rent. Once I was in Steamboat & my ski pants ripped. I rented ski pants while mine were being repaired.

We also live in SE and only ski once a year, so we don't have much winter clothing. For adults, we use layers and don't worry that it is not ski clothing, so it can be less bulky and we wear all but bottom layer multiple times on slopes. The essential is outside waterproof--we use rain jackets and pants really designed for hiking. A hat that pulls over ears, waterproof lined gloves (these you can buy at a ski shop there if no outlets near you), synthetic or wool socks (again available at all ski stores if not in FL), then several top and bottom layers--we use a lightweight turtleneck or mock, for January silk long underwear (top and bottom) that takes up no room and available through outdoors stores, fleece top and sweatpant or similar bottoms. The other real ski clothing we find essential is goggles--we bought at ski shop.
For 4-yr-old a snowsuit may be more practical. My sister bought snow clothes for her kids once while visiting us in Georgia at a Pennys outlet store.
I think the shipping idea is good for the goggles and other items that would not be need in Hawaii. I'd probably take my outerwear on with me as my rainwear.

My two suggestions would be: don't wear any cotton (except undies) when you're skiing and definitely don't wear jeans. Cotton is extremely cold if it gets wet (snow or sweat) and you'll be miserable. As the pp said, you don't really need ski pants/jacket if you have GoreTex rain gear and some long johns and good fleece. Non-breatheable rain stuff is ok, but you may get very hot.
I think shipping the cold weather gear is a great idea.

While I agree you don't specifically need rain wear in Maui most of the time, my husband always takes his GoreTex rain jacket on trips to be his everything jacket--windbreaker, coverup if air conditioning too cold, roll up for pillow, put down on ground to sit on, etc.
He has me doing most of the time, though I prefer a light sweater for the a/c and plane. But it is amazing how often a rugged waterproof item comes in handy in many ways.

If you don't already have all your ski attire, you can just buy it here at the Walmart and ship it back. There's a new store at the Outlet Mall called Columbia Sports that has great gear and some at fantastic prices.

I would definitely ship your ski things to the hotel and then box then up and have them shipped home when you leave. With the airlines charging per bag - it may be close to a wash anyway.
You also may want to consider shipping another box to the Ritz so you dont have to lug your Hawaii stuff to Park City. I'd check the rates with USPS - they are usually the cheapest. Also you can call the Ritz - I am sure they can give u whatever info you need as many people are now shipping their things ahead.
Have a blast my fellow Floridian.
