Palm Desert restaurant recs (seems a lot have gone out of business?)

Just one night (other is accounted for). Prefer someplace local, charming/funky are good (slacks and a top, even jeans, preferred). We've been underwhelmed by Palm Springs area restaurants over the many years we've been going -- we used to love Blue Coyote in Palm Springs, but it had gone seriously downhill last time we were there. Ate at a Mexican restaurant on El Paseo (the name of which I can't recall, but it was on the corner, closer to the western end of El Paseo) and it was pretty awful. Hate to spend big bucks on bad/mediocre food (we live in San Francisco, so good dining is a given). Any suggestions?

FWIW,

We "tried" to have lunch at Sherman's yesterday but there was a 1/2 hour wait, so we decided to eat at home instead. Good news though that it was "hopping".

Dinner last night was at Pomme Frites in Palm Springs (chosen by someone else). We went in very skeptical, given all the negative reviews on the web, and were pleasantly surprised. I had a steak that was cooked perfectly, the french fries were delicious, I tasted the onion soup which was very good. Service was not so great -- some people in our group thought the waiter had a bad attitude, others just thought he wasn't very good! Dinner for 8, a couple of whom (me included ) had a cocktail (very good lemon drop martini actually), about half of whom had an appetizer, only 1 dessert and coffee/cappuchino, obviously 8 entrees (1 coq au vin, 1 pork chop, 2 NY steaks, 2 carbonnade of beef, 2 mussels) came to $51.50 per person with 18% grauity. Not bad.

sheri, I've been to that Roy's and it is very good. I'm already gone and returned, but thought I'd keep the post going for others who might be interested. Thanks.

ksucat, we're there and back already -- just went down for a two-day visit with family this time. We'll be back, though, so I'll keep all your suggestions in mind for our next trip. Thanks!

The weather was sensational - 70-ish and sunny the whole time!

No, we haven't been th Le Vallauris, but I think we'll be back in the spring, or the fall at the latest.
