OuterBanks of NC trip report

I just returned from a week in the outerbanks and I cant even begin to tell you what an amazing time we had
I had spent many (I think 18 summer vacation in Nags Head and Kitty Hawk in total) and this was my first trip to the Duck/Corolla Area. It was such a different trip. It was much quieter, many more family's and much quainter like the outerbanks I remember when we first went 20 years ago. I dont think I will return to the Nags Head Area.

We didnt stay in a Mc Mansion (as many have complained sprung up in the area), well no it was for sure an oceanfront mansion on Pine Island. There where 20 of us in all so we needed a huge house. It was awesome. The weather was the best, we left rainy cold NJ on Saturday (made a pit stop in VA to visit friends) and ended up in Bright sunny Weather by Sunday. Ocean temps where perfect. We did very little shopping and cooked a few meals at home and ate out at Sunset Ocean Bar and Grill, where I had awesome Blackend Tuna (almost the best I ever had). Also had take-out pulled pork sandwhiches from the Pigman BBQ. Which is a must!
We rented an ocean kayak for the first time and it was so much fun. Since the waves wherent too large we all got to enjoy it. Well worth the $90 for the week (and they deliver too)
The sunsets over the sound where breathtaking and there was nothing better then sitting in a chair drinking a margarita and watching the end of another great day.

We also had many dolphin sitings at dinner time. Pods of at least 50 dolphins on 3 of the nights. It was unbelievable! I had never seen so many in all my years visiting.

The men played golf 3 days and loved the Currituck Country Club's course the best. Most of the crew just lounged by the pool and took full advantage of our private pool, with seperate kiddy pool and hot tub.

There was also this theater room in the house with all cherry paneling and a huge, (i mean huge) wide screen TV and stadium seating on leather couches. It was a huge plus for the couch potatoes, but we didnt even use it, since there was such perfect weather.

It was really a great trip and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a really quiet, super relaxing, family vacation.
Cant wait to go back next year!

Thanks for the report. Mom and I will do a lighthouse tour of the area in OCT, after we visit Biltmore and before colonial Williamsburg. Will try the pulled pork for sure!

We're going to OBX in September and renting a house in the Duck/Corolla area. How hard was it to get a tee time at Currituck? We passed up the house with priority tee times/reduced greens fees at Currituck for one that was oceanfront. Also, do you know how much the greens fees were?

Any other restaurant rec's or fun things to see/do in the area?

I am not sure what the cost was for Currituck, and I know they had made the t-times in advance so you might want to call asap. They has a 8:15 tee off so they could still spend 1/2 the day on the beach.
They also played Nags Head National and another I cant remember the name which was off the island just before the bridge.
I would much rather have a house ocean front, I am sure you can call now and get decent times.

There is alot to do in the general area. But Duck/Corolla is pretty laid back. Since there is alot of traffic since its 2 lanes in and out, I am not sure how much time you want to spend going to see things. The Wright Brother mueseum and monument is always worth a trip and the Kitty Hawk Kites stores across from the dunes are fun too.
I have done almost everything there is to do within driving distance in the last 21 years, I should write a book. The Lost Colony play was really very fun, a trip to Ocracroke Island was a great day trip too. We didnt really do anything none-beach related on this trip because we had perfect weather. Most of the sites I visited where due to rain.
We had lunch at the Sounfront Bar and grill and they had yummy pulled pork too. The Sunset Bar and Grill had more of a party atmosphere and live music at night. We just never made it out, only once for dinner. They had the greatest drinks there. You get to keep the funny mug, we have a pineapple, a pirate and a parrot.
My favorite store EVER is the Christmas Shop on Mateo. We didnt get to go and I am still upset. I am a big x-mas freak and it is like my mecca.
They have fun mini golf places too, a really good one right on the main highway maybe 1/2 hour from Duck
Any more questions just let me know
Have a great trip!
JK

Hi JK. Sounds like you're perfect to ask for advise. There are just the four of us wanting to visit the outerbanks for the first time. We'd love a cottage on the water but I'm finding nothing but places for large groups. I appreciate any and all advise. I was looking at the Duck/Corrolla area actually. We can visit loud but we'd like to stay our week in a quieter area.

Hope this reaches you after a year-old post.

"Hope this reaches you after a year-old post."

Year old? It's been 8 years.

If you click on that poster's name, they haven't posted on this board in 3 years.
