Outer Banks recommendations?

We'd like to rent a beach house on a VERY quiet beach - walk out the door and right on to the beach, not very many neighbors, etc.. We'd like to be able to get to a decent restaurant for dinner once in a while - but don't mind a little drive for that. What section of the Outer Banks would you recommend?

Hi, I just returned from a week-long trip to OBX. We stayed in a fantastic beach house in Rodanthe (about 45 south of Nags Head), owned by Midgett Realty. Rodanthe is an un-touristy area, small town, pretty quiet beach. The drive to decent restaurants is at least 30 minutes. The Outer Banks Steakhouse in Nags Head was pretty good and The Austin Creek Grill at the very south end of Hatteras was excellant (somewhat pricey but worth it)! I would definitely recommend going as far south as you can drive - at least get away from Nags Head, KittyHawk, etc. Hope this was helpful.

You don't say when you plan to rent the beach house which impacts significantly on your degree of isolation. Generally speaking, the farther south you go (below Oregon Inlet) the greater your chances of having lots of neighbors. We'd all love to have a private beach house on the ocean front but that's not the current state of the Outer Banks.

Try Frisco. It's about the smallest community on Hatteras Island (That's where you'll be once you cross the Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet. Plus, and this is a Big Plus in my book, you'll be just a few miles north of the free ferry to Ocracoke Island - that's where to go for Dinner and Drinks. If you time it just right, you can catch the Sunset as you ride the ferry - Can be stunning.

If you look carefully you can find some relatively private settings. We had a wonderful place on Runboat Circle, not Oceanfront but tucked nicely into a grove of Live Oak. Now if you really want privacy - check out the Soundfront.
You can find some cottages there that are really hideaways.

Enjoy!

Although it's little further south than the more popular outer banks towns, you may like the peace and tranquility of Topsail Island.

Are you stuck on the Outer Banks? Don't get me wrong, I love it there. But I found Hunting Island while doing a search for rental homes and it looks beautiful. here's a link to the homes I found. If it doesn't work, cut and paste:

http://www.vrbo.com/global/siteframe.asp?mainurl=http://huntingisland.net/thebigchill.htm&returnurl=/vrbo/9214.htm

Never been to the island, but if a picture paints a thousands words ...

try Carova, just north of corolla, only accessible by 4x4 (drive on the beach) great rentals right on beach, pretty isolated in the heart of wild horse country.....it will be very quiet. try cyberrentals.com, possibly twiddy.com
