Outer Banks or Wilmington in October
Driving from Fredericksburg to St. Augustine and wanted a stop in NC. Never been to the outer banks. Should we stay in Wilmington and then drive South thru the outer banks and stop someplace for lunch? Or pass on Wilmington and stay someplace along the outer banks? Where?

North Carolina has other barrier islands but I think the Outer Banks is properly defined those that start at the SE corner of VA and extend south to Hatteras. You will need to veer off of I95 around Richmond and head SE for 3.5 hours or so. You can wind your way back to I95 to continue to FL at the southern end of the OBX but it's not something I would do for a lunch or a single overnight.
The WIlmington area has a lot to offer and isn't as far off your path.
