OSU Graduation in Columbus 6/13 Hotel?

Hi,

My sister is graduating from OSU on 6/13/2004 (Go Buckeyes!). I plan to fly from SFO to Cleveland on 6/11 and drive to Columbus for the big event. We would like to find a clean, decent hotel within a short distance of the graduation ceremony (walking to the ceremony or near accessible Sunday public transportation would be ideal). I'm assuming parking is terrible on that day near campus. Our budget is $150 or less. Nothing fancy is necessary but clean is important. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your input! Any other tips/suggestions on how to weather this event best would be great (graduated from a small college that didn't have such a big affair.)

Go Bucks!

I assume the ceremony is at the Horseshoe? There is a Holiday Inn on Lane Avenue, right across the street from campus. I imagine it will fill up early. But it's a perfect location.

Public transportation is hard to come by in Columbus. But I imagine some hotels will have a shuttle that will drop you near the campus. There are a lot of inexpensive motels on Olentangy Road near campus. Or you could stay at a nicer place downtown (more likely to have a shuttle) or in the Short North.

Hopefully your sister will be of some help with tips on parking - it's been awhile since I've been to OSU's campus so I don't know where the best place to park is these days. Maybe she has some insights. I usually found a spot on the East/West streets north of campus, about ten blocks from the university.

As for advice on how to weather an OSU event: be very patient, be prepared to walk a lot (be sure to walk around the Oval and down High Street), and start singing "drive, drive on down the field, stand up for scarlet and grey...!"

Here's a website that lists hotels near OSU with prices, etc.

If you can swing the Holiday Inn on Lane, do it. We've attended two OSU graduations in the Shoe (go Bucs!) For the first we stayed at a Days Inn a short drive to campus and parked on the street (10th or 11th). Needless to say, it involved waking early, fighting traffic, and a walk through campus (not a bad thing). For the second, we stayed at the HI, had breakfast, strolled across the street and joined the long lines entering the stadium.

One thing I believe about OSU is they are very organized about these events. I enjoyed our daughter's graduations there more than any others I've attended.

I think the HI might have a two day minimum stay during that period. Give it a try.

Thanks for the great tips! Bummer, but the Holiday Inn on Lane appears to be fully booked. I am going to periodically call to see if they have cancellations, since the location seems ideal. Robinsen--thanks for the great link to hotel listings with distance to the stadium. Looks like we'll be dropping my father off at the stadium (undergoing chemo--pretty tired usually) and parking a bit further away.
Thanks again!

Your welcome AZWildcat. I actually used to live in Columbus. If you have any other questions about the area please let me know.

It's likely to be booked up, but you might want to try the Blackwell, a hotel that's part of the Fisher College of Business complex on the OSU campus.

Otherwise, I would stay downtown and take a cab to the campus.

When I graduated from OSU, the ceremony was held in Ohio Stadium. You could walk there from High Street if you caught a bus from downtown.

I just thought to check the OSU website...go to commencement.osu.edu.
Although the Spring graduation info won't be posted until early April, you can probably get some of your questions answered by looking at the Winter info. It looks like that ceremony was held at the Schottenstein Center.

The Blackwell would be a good alternative to Holiday Inn on the Lane but they may be booked already. If you stay downtown, I recommend the Westin Great Southern. You can always take a cab to campus.
