We are considering a drive north from KC to Omaha for a production of Phantom of the Opera (I have a 14 year old daughter....). The production of the musical I saw was in a much bigger city, and had the falling chandelier, the candles in the river, etc.
What can I expect of a production in the Orpheum? Is it a big theater accustomed to staging Broadway shows? I've never been there before.
Thanks for your time.

I'd like to help you more, but I've never actually been there (at least I can bump it to the top...).
But it has held Broadway shows before. I know a number of people who saw Rent there and loved it.
It's the best theater in NE and I'm sure a lot of the special effects of Phantom are created or modified to look fantastic in a wide variety of theaters.
The Orpheum might not be, say, the Fox of St. Louis, but being more modern probably gives it an edge as far as special effects go.
I saw Les Mis at the Lied Center in Lincoln and it still looked amazing, even though I wouldn't say the Lied is better than the Orpheum.
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have a great time. The Orpheum is not a high school gym.
I've been to the Orpheum a number of times and I've enjoyed it every time. Depending on where your seats are I think you will have a good view of the stage, although the "Loge" would be the best seats in my opinion. Fairly large theater, at least for the midwest. Parking is just across the street(west of the theater) and the entrance to the parking garage is off of Harney St which is one way going west. I would wait in the theater after the production to go to your car, it took me 30 minutes to exit the garage after seeing the Temptations in December. After or before the production you could go to the Old Market 4-5 blocks to the east and have dinner, M's pub, Vivaches, Upstream Brewery, and more. I avoid Julios and Spagetti Works. You could also go to the Joslyn museum on Saturday morning 10-12, it's free and has traveling exibitions. Not as big as Nelson-Adkins nor as abstract as Kemper but a nice place. Your daughter might appreciate the glass sculptors inside. Have a good trip!
Thank you for the great, and useful, information.
We did get tickets for a Sunday matinee.
