Orlando area - any other good shopping malls south of Florida Mall?

We are vacationing in south of Orlando 19 Aug to 2 Sept and would like to know of there have been new malls cropping up since we were there last in Dec 2002.

Thanks!

P.S. we are from out of USA, so shopping is part of our holiday!! I have got all the info on nearby Wal-marts and Targets as well as Sam's Clubs, but we are interested in new malls closer to our luxury vacation villa off Highway 532.

There is a huge new mall south of Orlando on I-4. You can get the exact location by checking the web page for Crate and Barrel. They have a huge mew store in that area now. I forget what exit it is, but I stopped to shop at Crate and Barrel.

There are 8 enclosed malls in the Orlando area: Seminole Town Center (North of Orlando in Sanford), Oviedo Marketplace (Northeast Orlando, near UCF), Altamonte Mall (North-Central Orlando), Fashion Square Mall (just east of downtown), West Oaks Mall (West of Orlando), Florida Mall (south, as you mentioned), Mall at Millenia (upscale-Macy's, Bloomingdale's, etc. at the intersection of I-4 and Conroy Road, southeast Orlando), and Festival Bay (north end of International Drive). There are several open air plazas, such as Colonial Promenade (east downtown area) and Waterford Lakes (east of Orlando). There are also some outlet malls in the Disney/International drive area.

If you like boutique shopping, I would try Winter Park/Park Avenue (northeast area of Orlando) or Thornton Park (downtown).

Orlando definitely doesn't lack for shopping areas. Happy hunting!!

The Mall at Millenia is very nice, IMO, and I think it's new-ish. That's the one with Crate and Barrel.

Visit the Wal*Mart on west US192 in Kissimmee, its loaded with WDW Mouse stuff and at a reasonable price. There is a Sam's Club about a mile to the west of W/M as well as other shopping, Target, Kohls etc. Close to your "luxury vacation villa" as well..

Thanks for the info. I"m easedropping -I'll be taking my son to college in orlando next week and since we're coming from up north, we were planning on getting most of his stuff once we're in FL so now I know where to shop! I thinks his campus is closest to the Millenium Mall mentioned. It sounds like a great mall. I can already hear Crate & Barrel calling me!

Hi Rachel!

Where is your son going to school? The only campuses I can think of around there are the Rosen School of Hospitality (UCF), Nova, and a cooking academy.

Main campus is NE of downtown Orlando. It says Orlando for an address, but many businesses do that here for name recognition.

Thank you for all your advices! We'll manage to squeeze a lot of shopping in between the visits to the tourist traps!

We can't wait!

thurstonbb is right, the UCF Main Campus is northeast of Orlando, next to Oviedo, FL. Oviedo has been swallowed up by Orlando as the area has grown. If Rachel's son is attending UCF at the main campus, she will be much closer to Oviedo Marketplace or Waterford Lakes (but no Crate & Barrel). Mall at Millenia would be 20-30 minute drive via toll roads and I-4.

If he is attending one of the schools I mentioned, she will be in close proximity to Mall at Millenia, Festival Bay, and Florida Mall.

Rachel, if you like Crate & Barrel, also check out Z Gallery in the same mall. If you go to Florida Mall, there is also a Pottery Barn and a William & Sonoma. Have fun!

If you are willing to head a ways up north, go to the two main shopping squares in The Villages: Spanish Springs Town Square and Sumter Landing Town Square.
Whenever I visit my mother in central Florida, a day up at the The Village is a MUST. The shopping is good, it's a pretty, comfortable setting, there's live music every evening (at both squares), plus plenty of good restaurants and the cocktail "shacks" where I can pick up freshly made pina coladas to sip while strolling or kicking back listening to the music. Although The Villages is a retirement city (pop. 63,000 and climbing), the shopping and restaurants Attract plenty of people under retirement age. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The setting at Sumter Landing is quite picturesque, particularly around sunset.

The two markets square areas are mostly smaller shops and cafes and non-chain restaurants. You can find the "big box" stores (Target, Barnes & Noble, Pier 1, TJ Maxx, etc.) along Highway 27 and the chain restaurants (Applebees etc.) near the entrance to the Villages. The big box stores there are cleaner, better stocked, and have more pleasant staff (IMO) than those closer in to Orlando.
One of the easiest ways to get there from Florida is the turnpike up to Highway 27 (just below Leesburg) then straight up 27--but don't let the drive along 27 depress you (lots of old strip malls and cheap, not particularly good restaurants).
