Organic Options near Mt Hood and Oregon Coastal areas?
We will be staying with friends in Portland for a week and plan to do short 2-day trips to Mt Hood and to the coast. I was wondering if there are restaurants and breakfast spots in both areas that serve organic produce and naturally raised meats. I'm breastfeeding and love to eat but would like to minimize pesticide consumption. We're prepared to bring groceries and cook in a Mt Hood cabin but would prefer to go out to eat if we can. I think you would have to research restaurants to see. There is a lot of fresh fish options, so the fish wouldn't be an issue. I think you would be in luck most places, but you would just have to check.
I know that Timberline Lodge's Cascade Dining Room and Ice Axe Grill on Mt. Hood seem to have local and some organic. Look at their menus. You are just minutes away from the "Fruit Loop", I imagine there is plenty of organic items right in the area and buying fruit (especially cherries for me) is really good.

With the exception of the chefs at Chez Panisse, I wouldn't trust what a restaurant tells me about the the absence of pesticides in the food they serve. With your concerns, I would eat before dining out with my family and in the restaurant I would only take a few nibbles.

Portland is probably the best area in America for getting local & organic foods. There are a bunch of places that serve or sell organic food in Hood River. I've had friends rave about Mt Hood Organic, and I loved Nora's Table, though I'm not sure if it's all organic or just healthy and tasty.

As lcuy says, local and organic are extremely popular here! It is such the norm here that there is no way to even begin listing places. Hood River is an agricultural area, as is the Willamette Valley, so you are hard pressed to find something that is NOT local.

thanks all. Nora's Table looks good but is described in a way similar to others I've seen in the Portland area -- emphasis on locally raised. I'm guessing that this means not certified organic (costly for small growers) but nonetheless naturally cultivated? That would be totally fine with me -- I trust people's word as much as I trust the certification process.
We are staying in a cabin, "minutes from Govy" (I don't know what this means....) off the Sandy River near Mt Hood Village. This seems to be in a totally different area from Hood River which seems to have some good restaurants.
Mt Hood Organic Farms seems to be more an orchard and wedding venue rather than an eatery -- do I have that wrong?

Yes, Mt Hood Village is off of hwy 26 outside of Sandy, which is basically on the other side of Mt Hood from Hood River. Mt Hood Village doesn't have a whole lot of restaurants, and most are dive type places. Good, but dives and you won't find the organic options at those. When they say near Govy, that means near Government Camp, which is a small town on the way up to the mountain.

You didn't read carefully or you would have noticed that the OP didn't ask for a critique of her dietary choices. We want to encourage new members to the board and you did not come across at all welcoming.

Please don't call me a liar. I have tried very hard not to be snide and rewrote my answer to you multiple times so that it would not be rude. I am just really surprised. I thought you were the guru of hiking and a person to look up to on the Northwest board. Why you are attacking a young mother and now me, I simply don't understand. I provided a link to an article in Scientific American which raises doubt about lower pesticide levels in organic foods in hopes information in the article would allay her concern about eating food other than organic.
When you feel somebody says something inappropriate, click the little triangle that is provided to report abuse. That is a much more appropriate way to express yourself than to pick fights with and hound those who answer questions in ways different from the ways you would answer them.

If you plan to have dinner at Tidal Raves, definitely make a reservation well ahead. There are few other good dining options in Depoe Bay. We called too late and ended up eating at Thai Bay where the food was pretty good, where the view was pleasing, but which was a little too far down at the heels for us.

I absolutely love seafood so Tidal Raves looks promising -- is Depoe Bay a reasonable overnight trip from Portland? Is there a standard route people have in terms of driving from Portland to a couple of spots on the Coast?
