Oregon itinerary

Planning a trip for September:

Day 1: Arrive Portland, drive to Hood River (stay: Columbia Gorge Hotel)
Day 2: Rafting White Salmon River / local wineries in afternoon
Day 3 Day trip to Pendleton Round-up & rodeo
Day 4: Columbia River Gorge drive / hiking near Mt. Hood (stay: Timberline Lodge)
Day 5: Mt. Hood to Bend -- cycle pub / explore Bend (stay: Lara House Lodge)
Day 6: Mountain biking at Bend / drive to Crater Lake (stay: Crater Lake Lodge)
Day 7: Crater Lake hike / boat to Wizard Island
Day 8: Drive to Ashland / Shakespeare performance (stay: Peerless Hotel)
Day 9: Upper Klamath River Rafting / Shakespeare
Day 10: Rogue River drive to Gold Beach w/ winery and creamery stops (stay: TuTuTun Lodge)
Day 11: Jet boat on Rogue River
Day 12: Coastal drive to Newport (stay: Sylvia Beach Hotel)
Day 13: Willamette Valley drive / winery visits / dinner in Portland (stay: The Nines Hotel)
Day 14: Explore Portland
Day 15: Depart

We've got hotels lined up at each location but can still tweak the itinerary if something is amiss. If we had an extra day we'd probably spend it in the Willamette Valley, but this was as much time as we could take ...

Recommendations for food / wineries / breweries and brewpubs most appreciated.

Thanks!

You have done excellent research, but some of the places you have selected to stay are not our favorites.

In Hood River we prefer one of the new rooms at the Best Western with a balcony on the river.

The rooms at Timberline Lodge are small except for a few rooms with fireplaces.

On the Oregon Coast we prefer a room with a balcony overlooking the ocean. TuTuTun Lodge is not near the ocean and rooms at Sylvia Beach Hotel do not have balconies and they lack the comforts you seem to be looking for elsewhere.

The boat ride at Crater Lake is really good! So much so that it sells out, so be sure to get tickets early. I know you can do it online now, but not sure when. Otherwise if you do it the day of, be there when it opens as there will be a line.

Yes, the rooms at Timberline are small - but we just love the resort/setting. Check out the outdoor pool and hot tubs - from where you can look up the mountain/glacier.

If you really want a second rafting adventure I like the Rogue River instead of the Upper Klamath.
Which route are you taking from Ashland to Gold Beach?
How many hours of bicycle riding before driving to Crater Lake?
Be sure to visit Powell's Books (on Burnside) while you are in Portland.

The Sylvia Beach is quite eclectic I am sure you know and I don't think there is a view from any of the rooms. They do serve a great breakfast- has been awhile since I had a dinner there.

My favorite place to eat in Newport is Local Ocean- in the bay front area. If brew pubs interest you, check out the Deschutes Brewing Co.

A nice coastal hike starts at Heceta Head State Park (also known as Devil's Elbow). Nice trail up to the lighthouse, then continues from behind the lighthouse down to a secluded beach- there is a map by the lighthouse.
The lighthouse keepers house is also a B&B and a nice place to stay in case you want to consider.

We were very happy with our stay at Timberline.

I wanted to stay at TuTuTun too, but they required a 2 night stay a couple of years ago, perhaps things have changed and they don't require a 2 night min.

You aren't really experiencing many places, unless you just want to drive and see them. There are many many great hikes along the way.

Don't miss Stumptown Roasters in Portland and Powell's Bookstore.

Thanks everyone, we appreciate the comments and thoughts.

By way of background, this is our first trip without the kids in about fifteen years, so we felt we could experiment a bit with lodging if it has upside like location or charm. I travel on business so much that I have seen all the "normal" hotel rooms I'll ever need to see.

With two weeks and a lot of places we wanted to visit, we figured a touring trip would work this time around. If we find any places that we particularly love, we'll head back for a more leisurely stay.

I did call the Sylvia Beach Hotel to confirm our room has a deck and ocean view -- not all of them do.

In my previous post I suggested the Deschutes Brewing but its actually the Rogue Ale -

Across the street from Sylvia Beach is April's Restaurant- always have had a nice meal there -
and within walking distance is Nana's Irish Pub- fun place and frequently has live music and Irish pub food.

There are some spectacular waterfall hikes along Hwy 138 between Crater Lake and Roseburg- most of them are short and pretty easy- hope you'll have time to enjoy a few- Watson Falls is a favorite of mine.

wow! You are doing a lot and it will be great. I always thought I wanted to stay at the Sylvia Beach hotel but we checked it out the last time we were in the area and it was very old and musty. I'd consider the Elizabeth Inn instead. And I second Local Ocean for fresh seafood, right by the docks!

Go to Everybody's brewing in White Salmon for good nachos and micro brews. Also in Hood River the Double Mtn and Pfreim breweries are wonderful. We like the Eagle Creek Hike in the Gorge, easy and pretty.

Pendleton is a tiny town that gets crazy packed for rodeo. I would skip this and spend another day in Portland if you can.
If you get to McMinnville in the Willamette valley, highly rec. Bistro Maison for lunch or dinner if the day hits right (they are closed MOn/Tues and I think only dinner on Sat.).

Ashland and Crater Lake are beautiful and we enjoyed the Upper Klamath raft trip. Are you in ok walking shape? Lots to do and that trail up from the boat at Crater lake caused some folks we saw a lot of pain (steep, out of breath).

Urban Farmer and Departure restaurants in the Nines are both really good. Def. check out the Saturday/Sunday market, waterfront, Japanese Garden, Wash Park, Nob Hill NW area (shops, restaurants, architecture) and Sat. morning Portland State farmers mkt if possible.

A fun thing to do in Portland is the Epicurian Walking Tour- try different foods, see some of the city and learn a little history as well
