Oregon coast with a 21 month old
Hi folks, planning a trip to Oregon in May. Babysitting for my son....we are working on it. But we are in a gap between children (fingers crossed) and wanting to go somewhere we've never been so we are planning to bring him if we can't make arrangements for him to stay with family.
I am wondering:
1. What town will be best? Originally was thinking bandon but now that we will be bringing DS, am thinking cannon beach. I would like a place where, aside from daytrips, we wouldn't have to use our rental car much.
2. Looking for suggestions for walks, hikes, daytrips, parks, or drives from CB that are toddler-friendly. He is ok to be worn in a pack but I don't know how excited he will be about being worn when he is a few months older.

Just north of Cannon Beach is the town of Seaside. There is a long Prommenade on the ocean side of town. The lodging should be a little cheaper there as well. You can make a day trip down to CB to see Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park. Continue a ways farther down the coast to the Tillamook Cheese factory with a little side trip to see the Cape Meares Lighthouse.
If you are coming by way of Portland, the northern Oregon coast makes more sense than going clear to Bandon. Bandon is beautiful if you like playing golf.
When I go through Seaside I stop for some good clam chowder at the Bell Buoy restaurant.
Just off the "Prom" in Seaside is a historic spot where members of the "Corps of Discovery" boiled seawater to get salt to preserve elk for the long trip back east.

I grew up going to the Oregon Coast several times a year and my favorite town is Astoria, its about a 45 min. drive north of Cannon Beach. It has beautiful scenic views. There are several museums in the town. And if the two of you like navel history, then there is Fort Stevens near by that guarded the mouth of the Columbia River until World War II. Fort Stevens is a 4,200 acre state park, that has a lot of historical information, trails to hike and the beach to play on. I hope you guys have a fun time on the coast. It is one of my favorite places in the world!

I would suggest Lincoln City, which is located on the Central Oregon Coast. Lincoln City is an excellent choice because there's a lot to do for all members of the family and it is a great central location for some day trips.
Lincoln City is home to 7.5 miles of beach as well as a number of City parks and hiking opportunities. There are many affordable lodging and restaurant options to choose from. If you like to shop there is the Tanger Outlet Mall or choose from the many small gift shops or antique stores.
Easily travel north to Pacific City, Tillamook and Cannon Beach, or travel south to Depoe Bay for some whale watching or Newport to visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the historic bay front.

Cannon Beach is a perfect town for what you are looking for. The town is pretty compact, so as long as you stay anywhere in the central park, you can walk to everything, except Ecola State Park. ESP is on the north edge of town, so a very short drive, but well worth it!
There is Haystack Rock right there in Cannon Beach, and it is a huge draw. At low tide, explore the tide pools.
You can rent funcycles to ride on the beach at low tide, and they have bikes that have carriers for babies/toddlers. The place is next to the Cannon Beach Hotel (near the Surfsand). Very popular as it is a lot of fun.
As for places to stay, there are lots of options. If you need suggestions, just ask. We go there often, and have for years, with our family.
Tillamook is a nice day trip, to the cheese factory. There is a self guided "tour", which is now mostly just looking over and watching the process. You can buy Tillamook cheese and ice cream in pretty much any grocery store in OR, but it is fun to stop here for a bit if you have the time.
Manzanita is another easy day trip, and one you can combine with Tillamook. The beach here is flat and not many people at all. The town is small, but there are a few nice shops,etc.
Newport offers a lot as well, but it is not an area that you can stay without needing your car, although it is very easy to get around in it. Nye Beach is a good beach area and has lots of good shops and restaurants. Then there is the bayfront, with more typical beachy stuff, but as well as it being a working port and with fish processing, etc. On the north end of town is Yaquina Head Lighthouse and then on the south end, right near the bridge is Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. Both are good. We typically take picnic lunches to Yaquina Bay. Just across the bridge is the Hatfield Marine Science Center as well as the aquarium, both of which are really good. Continuing down the highway there are lots of scenic places to either just stop and look at, or to get out and walk or hike. You can see a lot in just about 45 minutes south or so of Newport.

We drove the Oregon coast this past September and absolutely loved it. I totally agree with all great suggestions above from mms. The Tillamook Cheese Factory may sound a little touristy, but we loved it! The Oregon coast is loaded with state parks and I'm not sure there is a bad one!

I am not sure what the deal is with Lincoln City, Oregon, on Fodors these days. Just had time to pull up Oregon threads and am noticing yet another from the Lincoln City Visitors Bureau, without identifying themselves, this time from Scott Humpert on Jan 14. A quick google and we see he is the PR director for the Lincoln City Visitors Association.
