Oregon Coast: scenic/tasty stops along Hwy 38 from Portland to Coos Bay?

My friend and I making the drive from Portland to Coos Bay on Monday, July 16th. We're planning to take Hwy 38 because we've read that it's the most scenic.

Any suggestions for scenic or tasty stops along the way? Is the Dean Creek elk viewing area worth a visit? We'd also love to stop at any farm stands or local bakeries for treats along the way. Any small towns worth a short visit?

Lunch suggestions half-way down would be appreciated, too!

Thanks for your help!

Stop in Elkton at Tomaselli's bakery and cafe. Pick up a treat or have lunch. We like to buy their bread to take with us. The elk viewing area is always great and our girls love it every time. We go past there often on the way to visit family in Reedsport or to go camping

Stop at Hop Valley brewing in Eugene for lunch.

Hop Valley is good - however the North Bank is more scenic- has a nice deck on the river - as does Valley River Inn. However, Hop Valley is right off I-5 and would be easy to find.

Another vote for Hop Valley. It's in a busy area, but its a good brewery/restaurant and it is our go-to place quite often.

Is the Dean Creek elk viewing area worth a visit?

Definitely, but it's hard to miss. It's right at the roadside as you approach Reedsport, and has viewing platforms (and toilets) for your convenience. I'd bring a pair of binoculars on the trip.

Agree with Tomaselli's bakery in Elkton. Good sandwiches and baked goods; you can eat in or take it with you. The drive along Hwy. 38 is very pretty.

The elk viewing area is worth a stop. Most of the time it seems the elk are very easy to spot, but occasionally they aren't.

We just returned from Gold Beach yesterday and I don't remember seeing many (if any)roadside farm stands. There is a place that sells jam south of Bandon, but that's a good 30 minutes south of Coos Bay.
