Open ended ticket or flexible ticket

Jump to last reply

I have seen this addressed but it really didn't answer the question. I am doing an Appalachian Trail thru hike which takes approximately 6 months to complete or less or more depending on how fast one hikes or spends sightseeing. Hiking the trail can also have unforeseeable circumstances that would delay an exact arrival date at the destination which is Mt. Kitahdin, Maine. The trail head is Springer Mt, Georgia.

I would fly into Atlanta, GA and then return flight would most likely be Bangor, Maine. Airlines charge exorbitant fees in order to change a departure date. I noticed also that when making reservations online, the online reservation module will not allow for a return date beyond a few months more than the departure date. I will probably need to call the airline directly but has anyone had experience with booking an open ended ticket for return flight?

Thanks for any info.

Siarl
