ONE WAY car rental from NYC to BOS

Any car rental company which do not charge the ONE WAY drop fee between JFK or LGA to BOS airport ? Need the car for only 2 days and it looks the OW fee is even higher than the rental itself.

Depending on what your plans are for the 2 days, Amtrak (train service), might be a better plan.

Just noticed you are traveling between airports, and not cities, so might not be the best idea...

Unless you are making stops along the way, JetBlue from JFK or the Shuttle from LaGuardia make a lot more sense to me.

NYC to New Haven is hellish, though the coast route beyond New Haven on I-95 is okay. I-91 from New Haven via the MassPike has been grim, especially on weekends.

Considering that the car dropped in Boston will be subject to being driven back to NY by an employee of the company, who will cost the company hundreds of dollars for his own round trip travel in both company time and travel expenses, there is no reason you should expect that any rental company will not charge you a large drop fee.

And this is why you don't do one-way rentals. There is no incentive for the car company to retain its property in another state when it is licensed and insured in NY.

Thanks.
Reason for the car is that after 1 week in NYC we drop our daughter at a summer camp in Rhode Island near Wakefield then we spend 1 night in Cape Cod and next day we fly back home to Europe so it makes more sense to fly out of BOS which is closer than JFK but also much more expensive due to the OW fee. I think we would then drive back to JFK to avoid the fee.
Yes that is the rental company policy. I understand this. Nevertheless I asked this because sometimes there are exceptions. No OW fee is charged between CA and Las Vegas probably to encourage business tourism and money to LV, I assume.

IME one way drop fees are a crapshoot: sometimes they apply, and sometimes they don't, for good business reasons, I'm sure, but ones which are impossible for a traveler to discern.

Sorry, Big Russ, but IME that car which needs to be returned may eventually be rented to someone else who is doing the reverse trip.

We received an upgrade recently to a car which the Hertz agent told us needed to be returned and we happily did it for them.

I know a few people who have done OW rentals between Boston and JFK and Newark. So the business does go both ways here. Take a look at Enterprise and see what their fee is.

How many of the rental agencies have you checked - they don;t all have the sam rules. We don;t know since we us your own car to Bos if stopping on the way or going on afterward.

Both Kayak and Hotwire allow you to do a meta-search of a dozen or so companies, specifying a one-way auto rental.

Just for grins and giggles, I asked both search sites for a 48-hour car rental between JFK Airport and Logan Airport in two weeks. Both came up with a rental for $132 GRAND total, INCLUDING taxes and fees. That's not a bad price for a two-day rental.

We did one-way drives several times when our girls were in Bos and NYC. I think most were with Alamo, but I remember one with Thrifty. Use Kayak, plug in your schedule as above, and choose the one with the best overall price.

Or drive back to NYC. it's only an hour longer to NYC from Wakefield than it is from Wakefield to Boston. If you can travel on the parkways instead of 95, you can enjoy somewhat different views on each direction.

Take a Northeast regional train from Penn station to a stop in Rhode Island. Rent a car. Return the car where you rented it and then take the train into Boston.

For those dates, Enterprise Car Rental will cost $391 between JFK and Boston-Logan. A blind bid at Hotwire gives exactly the same cost, and you'll have to pay the whole amount at the time of rental, with absolutely no chance of a refund.

If you have a Discover, it would be easy to knock $40 off that cost.

If you make a reservation at Enterprise, you get a guaranteed price AND you can cancel (without any penalty) up to a few days before the rental date. CHECK THE CANCELLATION RULES -- they may NOT be as generous as I remember! If they are, you can make that reservation, but keep returning every few days to see if you can find a better deal. If you do, make the latter and then cancel the original reservation.

I have often done what PaulRabe describes: booked a cancelable reservation (or two), then kept checking for a better deal.

If you're from Europe you shou'dnt be paying drop fees. Does Kayak as for your nationality?

Try using HappyToursUSA to compare rates. it's for use by persons with non -USA drivers licenses.

No.
There are URLs for car rental searches for non-Americans, but Kayak is not one of them.
