One afternoon and evening to kill in San Fran

Amazingly, I have never been to San Francisco (except the airport)! I will have some time on an upcoming trip to spend a little time to have dinner and soak a little of the city in. I can't stay in the main area where the attractions are (too expensive for company policy). I will Uber or can into the city.

What suggestions do you have for an area to explore and grab dinner? Maybe a great cocktail before dinner....I know San Fran has a great, quality bar scene.

Top of the Mark for a drink.

What day of the week? Price for entree? Cuisine?

Mid- week....Wednesday night.

I don't mind paying for fine dining if the food and overall experience are worth it. Entree price $30-50. I love Italian, French, Greek and seafood. Steak is always an option for me. Less excited about most Japanese & Chinese cuisines and I know there is a lot of these in San Fran...just not my favorite.

I am guessing you are alone? I would highly recommend eat at Tadich Grill. It is old time SF and you can eat at the counter, so being solo will be a non-event. I highly recommend their cioppino - out of this world and we think the best in SF!

Have a drink at Top of the Mark and then take the California St cable car to Tadich.

Yep, alone. My husband will be so envious of the thought of cioppino...a fav of his and he would die to have it in San Fran

Ah, I thought I recognized the name. I saw something on the fried sand dabs on the Travel channel not long ago. Looks like a fun, old school place.

Tadich is a good choice. Best Clam Chowder in The City, IMO. Sand Dabs are plentiful now - I had them at Scomas in Sausalito on Tuesday, and bought some at our local grocery on Friday & fixed up a lemon buerre blanc. If Sand Dabs are not on the menu - the Rex Sole is excellent. Get glasses of Sauvignon Blanc with the chowder & dabs/sole. I've dined at the counter perhaps 25 times in the last 40 years.

PS - I don't know what "fried" is. Order the dabs/sole pan sauteed and boned. Tarter sauce is pretty good at Tadich, but not as good as Sam's. Of course, indulge on our crusty sourdough bread with dinner.

We've eaten there every trip (at least 6 trips) and the waitstaff hasn't changed;we always get the same waiter. They have a "reputation" of being "surly" which isn't the case in our opinion.

Stu - I think they called them pan fried (the sand dabs) but I could have imagined it - sauteed it is.

This is going to be a difficult choice, I can tell!

With such a short time in SF you should see the bay. Otis Redding said it best....."sitting on the dock of the bay."

Have the cab take you to the Ferry Building. There are great shops inside and the SLANTED DOOR RESTAURANT there is rated among the Top 5 in all of SF. Get a reservation!

There are many other restaurants close by. WATERFRONT, BOULEVARD AND ONE MARKET. We love Kokari but it is acroos the street from the Ferry Building and a few blocks walk. Avoid Sinbad.....old, dusty and getting ready to close down. You could even grab a ferry to go to Sausalito if you have the time.

Tadich is good.....but it is in the busy financial district with no water or ships to watch.

You know they've been fighting eviction for years? I can't imagine anyone who goes there anymore. I haven't been in 30 years (and I work across the street)

Lovely weather here in San Fran. I leave early tomorrow AM but enjoyed my time here and got 2 afternoons to check out the city.

Dinner night one - Colisseo (Columbus Ave - North Beach)- excellent gnocchi and bruschetta
Lunch day two - Belga (on Union St in Cow Hollow)- nice Waldorf salad and Rose wine
Dinner day two - Tadich (California Street in the Financial district)- sand dabs were excellent (and I was jealous of the cioppino the guy next to me got).

Enjoyed it all (except walking anywhere near Fisherman's Wharf).

If you want the very best, GARY DANKO.

If you want old-school, Tadich Grill (as others have recommended).

Don't know about bars as I do not drink at all.

Hi Denisea, just caught your post. Glad you had a nice experience in San Francisco, a city which we really like to visit.

Isn't your trip to the AC coming up soon? We're not sure of your dates, but hope that whenever it is, you have a wonderful trip.

We're leaving for Central Europe on September 1. Let's hope that we all have pleasant weather in our destinations.

We'll be eager to hear all about your trip to AC!
