on the way to san diego with kids

HI--I will be taking my kids to visit family in San Diego over Christmas vacation. But, on the way, I want to stop somewhere else. Any suggestions? It would be just for 3 days---ages are 8, 15, 17. Could really do anything. But, have been to SFran and LA--I was thinking Arizona, Palm Springs, NM???? Any suggestions? Thx.

We'll be flying from the NYC area.

So your in a private plane? Otherwise, I don't think stopping in the places you have listed is an option. 3 days is just going to scratch the surface in San Diego. Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Seaworld, plus a lot more.

Would you be in San Diego and then take some side trips?
Palm Springs is nice, but not a lot to do with the kids.
You could drive up to Lake Arrowhead (east of L.A.)and play in the snow. Or go skiing in Big Bear an hour drive east of Lake Arrowhead.
You could drive to Arizona but it's about a 6 hour drive to Phoenix or Tuscon.
New Mexico is even further - a plane trip away or day or two drive.
I would not recommend Mexico as it is too dangerous right now with the drug killings.

Sedona, Arizona is gorgeous for hikes and about 1-2 hours north of Phoenix which is a connection point for some flights to San Diego.

As other posters have noted--not a lot of time for "other places". How about a whale watching trip? Unless you have a rental car--you might consider a drive into Baja. Don't stop in TJ, but head down to either Rosarito Beach, or Puerto Nuevo.

I would agree with Nanabee to avoid Mexico altogether....too much risk with the drug killings. You can go whale watching right from San Diego.

Drug killings or not, Rosarito Beach is my least favorite place on planet earth. Seriously disgusting.

From the OP, i thought it was the stopover that would be for 3 days, not the whole trip to San Diego.

First, thanks for all of the replies. I know it's quick, but we're visiting family and have been there many many times before. We'll prob. do sea world or the zoo, older kids will play some golf. It will be more of a hanging out trip than a true san diego sightseeing trip. That being said, I wanted to spend some time with my kids before we get to SD. I can go to AZ, rent a car and drive to SD. Good idea. I also thought of doing LA, Disney land, etc. The prob. is keeping both an 8 year old and a 17 year old happy. Whale watching won't be too engaging for the youngest. I was mainly looking for someplace else to go on the way to SD, b/c once we're there we'll be doing family stuff. Thanks.

You could fly into Ontario Airport and from there Palm Springs is about an hour away. You can ride the tram up the moutains, hike, golf, shop and eat! There is also the Living Desert that is cool for young ones. AND from PS it is only about a 2 hour drive back down to SD.

thanks. i was just reading about the 9 people found beheaded in tijuana..yikes!! Where would you recommend I stay in PS?

Also--in response to Barbara--you're correct in that the stopover will be 3 days but the san diego portion would also be 3 days.
