Old Lahaina Luau, conventional table or mats?

My family of five went last December. We sat at a table and had a great time. The view is excellent no matter what table you sit at. My sister and her kids sat on the mats. After the show they complained about sore bottoms and the fact they had to stretch their necks to see over the people in front of them. Another reason you may want to sit at a table is the fact that rain can come and go quickly on Maui no matter what time of year. It rained on us during most of the show and I was glad we weren't sitting on wet "mats".

Another vote for a table! I got to go to this with my family to celebrate my folks 50th. It was wonderful. But it was raining a bit that evening (they handed out lightweight ponchos to everyone), sitting on the mats wouldn't have been much fun for us, I don't think.

Just got back. Saw show on monday march 14th. Sat on mats. No rain but my leg kept cramping up on me. We were in the front row so didn't have to look over people but would definitely sit at a table next time and you can see from everywhere. It was a fantastic show.

We've done both over the years, and the table is the way to go. My long legs just can't take sitting in the lotus position for the entire show. Sooner or later, your butt or legs will begin cramping, and you won't get the most out of the show

I couldn't imagine doing the OLL and NOT sitting traditional seating. It's part of the over-all experience to me. We eat tatami style at home, and I guess I don't understand the "cramping and sore bottoms" from sitting.
Rain might be an issue during winter months, but rarely does rain fall in Lahaina during the drier months from April to October.

Another vote for the tables. We will be going for the second time this July, and will be sitting at the tables for the second time. During our first trip, some who were on the mats looked VERY uncomfortable.

The mats sounded like a great, authentic thing to do initially... but ny family was glad we ended up reserving the tables. Even my kids, who probably wouldn't have had sore butts, preferred the tables. Reserve far enough in advance that you get tables that are closest to the front.

When we went we sat at a table towards the back - mats were not available as we waited too long to make our reservation and only got in due to someone else cancelling. Now given I haven't had the mat experience, but I wish I had - I was jealous of those sitting up front on the mats. I would disagree that you have a great view from wherever you sit - there are a lot of people and even though I'm tall you had to peer over many heads to see the stage. It was a great time, but I definitely felt like I was in the back of a crowd. If we did it again and I planned ahead better, I would try for the mats.

After attending the Luau and sitting close to the front I still think the mats would have been a better choice. You are right in front with no obstructions. Most of the posts on where to sit were in favor of tables because it is more comfortable. That is true but for a couple of hours sit on the mats. I will next time.

First of all go the table route. Much better choice. However a little off topic, I have been to many many luaus and I was told that this was the "best" and most "authentic" luau on Maui. While it may indeed be more authentic it was one of the more boring luaus I had seen. The prices are very high mostly because of the huge amounts of alchohol that is served. If you are not a big drinker you will not get your money's worth.

My husband and I have sat at the tables and on the mats. I liked the mats because we had GREAT seats. You are so close that you can see sweat beading up on the dancers. However, i will say my husband was full of complaints about how uncomfortable it was. I will agree, that after 20 minutes, there is no where to get comfortable, but i was willing to put up with it to get such great views. However, my husband informs me that next time we will be in chairs.
