Oklahoma City in Sept.

In Sept. mdh and I are going thru Ok. City, mid afternoon, spend the night and leaving early the next AM. Would love to see the Memorial and museum and have a decent meal before reitring. Is that doable with only a couple hours to spend? Should we consider something else for those couple hours?
Anyone have any suggestions re hotel/motel near enough to museum for easy access, safe, clean and still under or around the $100 mark? Fun pubs, bars, eateries nearby as well?
Thanks for any input.

The Memorial is very moving and interesting.

Let me suggest a couple of places to eat. The major hub of food is in Bricktown. However, I would highly reccomend a place called Big Truck Taco(it isn't a truck anymore, but is now in a building). Some of the best taco you will ever eat. About 1 block away is a place called Cuppies and Joes. This is cupcakes and coffee, great after your taco. Everything at both places are amazing. I have eaten about everything at both places. This is about a 10 minute drive from the Memorial. A little closer is a place called Irma's Burger Shack, if you are in the mood for a good burger. Another good Coffee Joint is Red Cup. For what it's worth, I don't like Toby Keiths I Love this Bar. Another good place to eat and it has been around forever is Cattlemens Steakhouse. Good for lunch, breakfast, or dinner. Rated as one of the top breakfast in OK, just last week in the newspaper. If you have never had Calf Fries(mountain oysters), theirs is the best I have ever had.

Can't help you with the bar scene. There is a plethora of places to stay like LaQuinta Inn, Hampton Inn type places. If you happen to be in town during a major sporting event, hotels will be more expensive.

How was your Big Bend trip? I remember you were going a few months back. We have never been, but are going in March. Did you eat at any of the places I suggested for Austin/San Antonio? I think that is what I commented on anyway. I live in OK, right on the AR border.

spirobulldog:

Haven't been to either Bend or Austin yet. All part of this road trip we are taking in Sept. Doing the Bend/Austin/San Antonio trip on the way east to Pensacola (sure hope the oil crisis isn't a problem there) and then coming back West on a route a little further North. Did print out your suggestions though for food etc. Thanks for that.
And......was considering the La Quinta on Meridian Ave. there in Ok city. Is that fairly centrally located? How far to Memorial? Is traffic bad there in the city around rush hour?
Will definitely let you know how Bend went when we finish there.

There is a nice Courtyard by Marriott downtown...may nudge your budget a little though. Staying in OKC was always frustrating because so many of the hotels were over by the airport, and not close to where we were driving on I-35.

You didn't mention it, but kids and I did the Cowboy Hall of Fame & Museum on a visit to OKC once and it was really pretty interesting

La Quinta on Meridian is not centrally located. It is near the airport and is not a place I would put someone unless they wanted a hotel for an early morning flight.

There are several hotels to choose from in the Downtown/Bricktown area that would be close to the memorial. You haven't specified a price range so I'll mention a few:
Skirvin - beautiful old hotel now owned by the Hilton Group. ~$135/night
Sheraton - is on sale for $82 night. Nice accomodations and good location
Residence Inn by Marriott is in Bricktown
Hampton Inn & Suites is also in Bricktown

For a nice meal Museum Cafe is very nice and offers salads, fish and meats. Lovely place.
Also, Red Prime for a fine beef - not dressy anymore but still serves up a nice meal and also offers a prix fix meal that is a great deal for $35 - appetizer, entree with side and dessert.
Cheever's Cafe is a great local spot as well. Just a few minutes north of the memorial.

In Bricktown, you will have a lot of options in walking distance - Zio's Italian, The Melting Pot, and Abuelo's Mexican as well as others.

Big truck is only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday.

2 hrs is plenty for the memorial and museum. Memorial is moving, museum is boring.

I think the Cowboy museum and 45th Infantry Division Museum are much more interesting

I have to differ with bigtyke. I did not think the museum was boring. I was close to tears. Although, in these matters, perspective is everything.

BeachGirl is spot on with her hotel and dining recommendations. We recently put clients in the Residence Inn in Bricktown and they enjoyed it. Also downtown is the more trendy Colcord Hotel, and a Renaissance.

Have a great trip!
H

I will say, I looked at hotel rates this week for another client, and was appalled at the rates. Then I heard this morning that a movie is being filmed downtown, hence the rates. Hopefully, in September it will be more reasonable.

A few more restaurant suggestions would be Stella, a new italian place that I found to be tasty and a good experience. Also, for a quick meal, Hobby's Hoagies. Great subs, cheese steaks and awesome homemade pizza - yum. Both places are on Walker Ave. Hobby's in the 300 block and Stella in the 1200 block.
