Oh, no! It's a What to Wear West question!
I've been looking at the weather forecast for my upcoming trip (Salt Lake City/Tetons/Yellowstone/Badlands/Mt. Rushmore etc. from 04 June to 18 June) and it looks like a range from 30's at night (in Yellowstone) up to maybe 75 during the day (Salt Lake City.) So of course layers will be my first thought, but I'd love some input from you with experience!
First, of course, is that the "real feel" weather is quite different from knowing the temperature.
Is it a good idea to take gloves and a scarf for Yellowstone, for example? Might it be warm enough to swim in the Great Salt Lake? What did you take that you found to be invaluable, and what would you leave home next time?

I did swim once in the Great Salt Lake many years ago. The shallow water may be warm enough to swim in but your teeth may be chattering from the wind chill when you get out. They have fresh water showers to use when you get out. I hope they are warm enough. Don't wear a swimsuit that you value very highly.
The salt is not good for them.
Make sure you have a good raincoat with you.

Layers is the key. Jacket, fleece vest, long-sleeved shirt or t (capilene type stuff is good). A fleece type hat for evenings, lightweight gloves (I bring glove liners which are very light weight and easy to wear).

Thanks, everyone! It sounds like I'll need to do similar to what I did in the South African winter on safari--enough layers not to freeze in the morning or at night, lightweight and foldable enough to carry around in the afternoon. Of course, I'm always looking for ways to pack less, but the thin down jacket, scarf, and gloves are goin' in!
