October in salt lake city

Hie!
I'm a french doctor and i'll be in Salt lake city for congress in october(from 18th. to 24th.).
I'll be accompanied by my wife and our little daughter(10 years old).
With the programm of my congress, I've some
(1/2)day(s) without "medical" occupations..;
We are thinking to this programm :
-on the 19th., afternoon and evening, frightmares on lagoon amusement park. Halloween is a really american occupation and we want to give our daughter a "taste" of it...Someone knows about this park and its
"halloween's" entertainment??Or another idea(NB : 19th. is the exact birthday of our daughter so we don't need to miss a great day...).
-on monday 20th., afternoon, Antelope island : the animals, the great lake and the hikes ??Some other ideas for seeing the salt lake ??
-on wednesday, a tour in salt Lake(temple, capitol, some houses and museum and shopping)(for me, only from 10 to 2 but for my wife and daughter, the all day)..
-finally, on thursday, trip to Provo(doll museum for both, natural history museum with dinausorus for the daughter, the town for both three...) and return or by the caves nearby or by one of the cottonwood canyon .
Other ideas??
Which restaurant with fun for the family?? and a good restaurant with maerican "salt lake's" speciality ??
Thankd s for respons
Erik.

Hi Eric. Sounds like a pretty good plan. I'll comment a little on each:

- Lagoon. Your daughter will probably have fun at Frightmares and Lagoon. However, don't be prepared to be wowed at Lagoon. If you're expecting something similar to Disneyworld, you'll be very disappointed.

- Antelope Island is pretty fun, but that is about it for Salt Lake. There is not a lot to see and the lake can be a little smelly at times so any boating or other tours are not too exciting.

- Your plan for tourning downtown sounds good. Your wife and daughter will probably enjoy shopping at the "Gateway" which is a nice collecion of outdoor shops on the north side of downtown.

- The Dinosaur museum you are referring to is in Lehi- about 25 minutes south of Salt Lake. It's at a place called Thanksgiving Point which also has a beautiful botanical garden so you can spend almost the entire day at the museum, gardens, and other shops/etc they have at Thanksgiving Point. You might want to consider that and skip Provo altogether.

- The caves you'll want to visit are called "Timpanogas Caves" and they are near the Thanksgiving Point area south of Salt Lake. They are up American Fork Canyon and they offer a nice tour. It requires a pretty steep 3/4 mile hike to get to and they have rangers taking you on tours. It might be open only on weekends though during October so I'm not sure.

As for dining options, it may depend on what price range you're looking at, but there are several in Salt Lake that could be recommended depending on your food preferences.

On other idea may be to visit Park City which is a fun town for shopping and sigtseeing. Also, the ski resorts up the canyons (Big or Little Cottonwood) would be a pretty drive and place to look at.

For food, we'll tempt to content everyone...So, some funny restaurants with "easy" food for the daughter, but also 2 or 3 good restaurants with specialities(utah's trout or other
utah's specialities,...).
Price is not a real problem, even if with a children , we'll avoid the "too
much" restaurants, with "tie and jacket"...

I think your wife and daughter would enjoy a day in Park City more than a day at the Great Salt Lake - Fun shopping, alpine slide and Utah Olympic Park .

Restaurants your daughter might enjoy are the Old Spaghetti Factory at Trolley Square, PF Changs, California Pizza Kitchen.

So, I change a little the schedule :

monday : park city or sundance.

wednesday : Salt lake City.

thursday : drive to Provo(the doll museum because my wife don't want to miss it...)with the lunch in Provo and after, Thanksgiving point(museum, park...because it's open till 9 p.m.).

We'll see for the great salt lake with pollution, smell, ...and temperatures...
Does someone know which T? have we to expected in this period of mi-october ?

October is a great time to visit Utah. The draught will affect some of the fall colors, but you'll still see some colors in October. The temperature should be great - cool in the morning and evening and warm in the day. Park City should be even more cool - sometimes down-right cold that time of year. Some of Utah's best restaraunts are found in Park City.
For lunch in Provo you might enjoy one of the Brazilian restaraunts that bring an assortment of grilled foods to your table. Tucanos and Rodizio Grill are two of them in the Provo/Orem area - great for the family.
Hope this helps.
