I've heard Oconee State Park in northwest South Carolina is a relatively quiet but really nice mountainous area to get away for a day or two. Has anyone camped or rented cabins here and are there nice hiking trails, swimming and other things to do with kids (girls age 13 and 9)?

The park is lovely. If you can get the girls out of the lake -- and it won't be easy -- you can find hiking of all degrees of difficulty, visit the US Fish Hatchery, drive up to Highlands for a day of cute shops and cafes, go over to the Chatooga River for rafting and kayaking, etc.
I'm prejudiced, of course, since my grandfather supervised the original construction in the 1930's (all the stone and big beam buildings)and my grandmother was the original manager of the dining rooms, though I am not sure whether they still exist.
