I have only been to the John Hancock Tower observatory at night, and the view from up there was amazing. I can't comment on the Sears Tower. The nice thing about the John Hancock is that it is right near Lake Michigan and you have an awesome view up and down the Lakefront.

I would go for the John Hancock, while the views are similar the Hancock has an open air room(like a screen porch) where you can get the true city experience of the sights and sounds.

The above poster is right about the women's bathroom! Go up to the cocktail lounge in the evening for a drink to take in the views ... they are great. The women's bathroom has a wall that is a floor to ceiling window that offers great views ... probably better than you can get with one of the tables! Sorry men - I understand there is not a similar window in the men's room.

That is so funny you all posted about the view from the womens restroom! That is the best view from the John Hancock building! You leave the stall door open and kinda feel like you are peeing on Chicago!

Patricia, Here is another vote for John Hancock over Sears. Our family loves to vacation in Chicago and after the first time or two, we always choose "Big John".... We like to go up at dusk and watch the sunset. Amazing. Last summer we went on one of the nights they were having the fireworks at the Navy Pier (I believe Tuesday and Saturday) Beautiful!!! Have Fun..... Vacationmom

Another vote for the Hancock. Here's why: First, the Sears Tower is rather far south and west from the rest of the city, so the view is really only good to the east and north, and even then, you are further from most of what's interesting to look at than you would be at the Hancock. The Hancock's sort of right in the middle of things, and the view from all sides is good. Second, with the Sears Tower, you can get hung up on their self-hype, which adds to the time getting up to the top; and no good bar/fair restaurant once you're there. Third, there's plenty else to do right around the Hancock, whereas you have to kind of schlep from the Sears to get to most restaurants, etc. etc.

If you are looking for a romantic evening with incredible views (in and out of the bathroom! WOW!) Go to the John Hancock! It really is breath taking. I grew up here in the city and this is one place that I don't take for granted!
