Oahu Day Trip
Couldn't pass up the $19 flights! Will be on Maui end of October visiting my son. I have visited Maui/Kauai/Big Island many times but never Oahu-other than the airport. Plan on renting car for the day. Want to visit Pearl Harbor & North Shore. Any suggestions on how to get the most out of my day? Would also like food recommendations-best shrimp truck, shave ice & dinner suggestion. Flight arrives 6:57am & we depart 9:35pm. Mahalo!

There is alot you can do on Oahu the Aloha Tower and marketplace is quite nice and a great view from the top of the tower. Not to far from there is the Iolani Palace. There are fan loyalties it appears for the shrimp trucks as Giovannis has recieved several posts Romy's has good following. Dinner come to Waikiki and enjoy the sunset from Duke's Canoe Club. You can also search for Dusty he has several links for Oahu.

Unfortunately, if you are arriving on a workday, there will be A LOT of traffic when you arrive, especially going from the airport toward town.
Pearl Harbor is in the opposite direction, so you shouldn't have much problems getting there. Trouble is, I don't know what time it opens. I might even consider just having breakfast at the airport, then rent the car and head out to Pearl when it opens. I repeat, you DO NOT want to be driving toward town during that time of the morning.
After Pearl, head on up to the North Shore through H-3 then Kam highway. For lunch, you can stop at Giovani's Shrimp truck in Kahuku. As you continue around, you can stop in Haleiwa for shave ice at Matsumoto's (still the best IMO).
You should still have quite a bit of time, and can grab dinner almost anywhere and still make your flight.

I would head straight to Pearl Harbor after your flight arrives - not exactly sure what time it opens, but I've heard that the big tour groups start arriving sometime between 7:00-7:30 a.m.
By the time you pick up your rental car, eat breakfast and arrive at Pearl Harbor, it will be closer to 8:00.
I second travelinandgolfin's plan of driving to the North Shore after Pearl Harbor and doing a counter-clockwise island drive.

Mahalo for the info. We had a great day! Flights on Go were good. Rented car & were at Pearl Harbor by 7:45am. Got on the 8:45 tour. Went to swap meet for an hour then drove to North Shore. Stopped at several beaches, Turtle Bay resort, lunch at Giovanni's, followed Dusty's circle island suggestion and made several more stops on the way to Waikiki. Dinner & sunset at Dukes, shopped a little and then had a horrible time fighting traffic & poorly marked maps & street signage trying to get back to the airport. I find it easier to get around San Francisco then Honolulu! Enjoyed North Shore& Pearl harbor but was very happy to get back to Maui!!
