Oahu and Kauai - itinerary planning questions

Jump to last reply

Oahu must do’s: Pearl Harbor / Arizona Memorial. I wouldn’t mind revisiting the international marketplace and just hanging out and seeing Diamond Head and Waikiki, as it’s been a long time since I’ve been there. Although I remember the north shore being quite beautiful, I think we can skip it as the majority of our time will be spent on Kauai with enough natural beauty.

Kauai must do’s: Enjoying the natural beauty of Hanalei Bay and surrounding area on the north shore, and Waimea Canyon and a catamaran ride to see Napali coast from the south side. The rest of the time devoted to just taking in the natural beauty and relaxing and swimming.

Itinerary thoughts: Fly into Honolulu on Saturday evening(eat and crash in hotel). Sunday and Monday spend around Honolulu (including Pearl Harbor). Tuesday (early morning) fly to Kauai. Get rental car. I would like to spend 4 days on the north shore and 4 on the south shore. Not sure which one to visit first. I’m thinking south shore as we want to take a boat tour of the Napali Coast and should probably schedule that early on in the vacation. Then end our vacation in the north shore.

I’m thinking the day of departure (Honolulu to home) we should check out of our hotel/rental on Kauai - maybe get a late checkout). Enjoy the morning in paradise. Have a late lunch, and get a late afternoon flight to Honolulu airport. I have a one time pass to use in the USAirways lounge, so I guess we can hang there until our flight at 11:00 p.m.

OR….we could fly into Honolulu and spend the next day there. Then the next morning go to Kauai, and return to Honolulu the day before our flight. Check out what we missed on our arrival; ask or pay for late checkout at the hotel the next day (departure) and enjoy an extra day there before heading to airport for late night departure.

It would be nice to spend the first few days on Oahu and have that portion of the trip “out of the way,” however, four flights on the day of departure might be a bit much.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this. When I went to Oahu 30+ years ago, I suffered severe jet lag. I didn’t enjoy a large chunk of that vacation because of it, so am weary now that I’m much older and less peppy!

Also, my mind is set on spending our time on Kauai between the north and south coasts. I want to get the feel of both, and my husband would like to minimize time in the car, as he spends a lot of his work day driving around and doesn’t find it relaxing on vacation.

There are enough posts for me to get a good idea of where to eat, so don’t think I’ll need to ask any of those questions. I’ll probably start another post about accommodations, as this one is already too long. !-). Thank you!!!
