I will be going to New York City the end of this month with my 5 year old son. I have been before, the most recent time was last April.

I have 3 questions I was hoping I could get help with. The first is in regards to the weather, I live in south florida so I am not used to the cold. Las year when I went I wore a leather jacket and layered underneath in the mornings and nights I was still cold. The weather was in the low fifties I think. This time I was advised to get a wool jacket, I managed to find one from J crew. I wanted to make sure that would be better. I know I will still probably need a sweater underneath. I also bought gloves and a hat this time and managed to fing my son a heavy winter coat.

My next question is that I am between 2 hotels for us to stay at. The first is the residence in which is on 39th and 6th and the other is the Millienium broadway, I stayed at that one when I went once by myself for work, but was thinking the other location might be better since I will be with my son. The room is bigger and while it is not in the middle of everything, it still relatively close to things. Just wanted some feedback or advice.
My final question is in regards to a show. Last time I was there with my wife and 2 sons we took them to see Tarzan, and got the tickets in advance, when I have been on my own I usually get tickets at TKTS. This time my son wants to see hairspray, he loved the movie, should I get the tickets ahead of time or will the likely have them at TKTS?

I'll think of other recommendations but for starters...definitely have a warm scarf on hand (or purchase one here). You might also want to consider wearing leggings/long underwear if you really get cold.

The Residence in is in a perfectly fine locaiton. It's in between grand central and the herald square area, which gives you lots of subway options, so get anywhere else you want to go.

You should check out Broadwaybox.com for discounted tickets that you can purchase in advance. It may be a little more than TKTS, but it saves you the time of waiting on that line. There should be Hairspary discounts.

As far as weather, it could really swing either way (40s to 70s). It's unpredictable. Just check the 10 day forecast before you leave to have some idea.

Feb is nothing like April. You could get warm temps - like 50 during the day - or it might never get over 30 (2 days ago our high was 18 and at night with the wind chills it was about 10 below).

Also - be sure you have waterproofed shoes or booties. So far we've had practically no snow this year, and that may continue - or you could get 10" - although an inch or two or some sleet is probably more likely. But, you ay have to deal with slippery sidewalks. Also be sure you have sturdy folding umbrellas.

As for tickets check out broadwaybox.com - it;s likely they have discounts on advance tickets - so you don;t have to waste time - in possibly freezing weather - standing on line at TKTS.

I'm sorry.. I can't read today! I see you're coming hte end of this month. Yes, it can be cold and it can snow. Do check the forecast, bring layers and waterproof gear.

Heh, if 50s is cold, then you'd better get some long underwear and wear layers and a heavy coat, hat, gloves, and scarf.

February (at least here in PA) is usually the snowiest month of the year, so be prepared for walking in it.

Yes, discounts are available until March 2 and I'd definitely get them in advance for better seats. I'd call instead of doing it on line. Information is on the site.

Incidentally George Wendt (Norm from Cheers) is currently playing the mother and I hear he's one of the best. In fact, he recently signed on to continue as Edna until mid July!

thanks everyone for all the tips. I did not mean to post twice, I tried to edit the post and made a mistake.
I feel more prepared we have scraves, gloves and hats I got my son a coat and got the wool one for me this morning. We even got waterprofing spray this week when we bought shoes for the kids they gave it away, I have some timberland boots I will probably wear. I found long undershirts too, the only thing i may have a problem finding here is long underwear. Snow would be ok to see my sone has never seen it, i just hope it does not rain we got enough here the past few days.

Well I don't know if these float your boat...but if it happens to be extremely cold they will definitely be great for layering. My only concern with long underwear is that you can get hot very quickly once you go inside.

Thanks Katie H. for the link. I am not sure I could wear them with out feeling like I was in a superman costume! LOL. I am hoping with the jeans and the longer jacket I will be ok. It would be cool to see George Wednt as Edna. I had heard good things about Xanadu and legally blonde too =but since my son saw the movie he wants to see hairspray and since he is only 5 I figure something he likes will hold his attention better than something he does not like as much.

I prefer CuddlDuds to silk. But, either doubles as sleepwear. I totally disagree that you'll roast indoors in either.

We live in New England, so have waterproof/windproof down outerwear, but in the alternative would go with waterproof/windproof rainwear with polartec or fleece underneath, versus wool, which really isn't very warm outdoors. Especially if you're cold when temps are in the low 50's, which is perfectly understandable.

And, don't forget warm footwear!

As for hotels, the Millennium is better located for most seeing and doing. An extra few blocks when it's frigid (to you) will be miserable.

Here's hoping for a spell of milder weather for you!

Appreciate the tips. I think I will be prepared for the cold. The new jacket is heavier than the leather one I wore last year. When it was in the high 40's low 50's last year I was ok. It did feel cold but not unbearable. Believe it or not a few days of cold is actually a treat after living in south florida for so many years.

I was just extra cold first thing in the morning but did not have a super warm coat or gloves or a hat/scarf. So I should be ok, Last time I was in England I just had sweaters and a rain jacket and it snowed one of the days I was there and I bought a knit cap and while I was cold I was able to walk around.
Still deciding on the hotels i have both reservations booked and still have tome to cancel one. I guess they both have pros and cons.

I will keep checking the weather reports
