NYC - TKTS 1/2 price
My brother and his family are visiting NYC for 3 days from June 29-July 2. They want to go to the TKTS booth for a Wednesday matinee. I know the booth opens at 10 am. However, if they want to get the best tickets and shows available through TKTS, how early should they plan to line up?
Also, is there any way of discovering what popular shows have been available through the TKTS booth recently?

this will tell you all you'd like to know - they show what shows were available the past week, payment, etc.

There is no way to out-guess the TKTS booth offerings. You can read on a board what is available at the time you get in line; however, by the time you reach the window it is possible that some shows have been removed from the list and others have been added.

You just never know about timing at TKTS, as often more shows/better seats are released later in the day, even as late an an hour ahead of showtime...

They'd be better off either buying them in advance online or by phone using the discount codes from one of the websites mentioned above. It's a holiday weekend, the city will be filled with tourists and for more than 1 or 2 tickets, options may be slim on the same day. You only wind up paying a bit more with transaction fees than you would and it saves time and angst.
The other idea is to go to the TKTS booth at the South Street Seaport the DAY BEFORE the matinee and they can get tickets there in advance. Finally, if they want to avoid the transaction fees, they can print out those discounts for any shows they would like and take them to the box office when they arrive in NYC.

Yes, mclaurie is absolutely correct. The best way to get TKTS tickets for a Wednesday matinee is to buy them the day before at the Seaport booth. And you can always get virtually the same discount by using discount coupons and sometimes get better seats by buying them 2 days before at the box office before they are released to TKTS.

Try the discount web sites (like Broadwaybox.com) first. They are offering great discounts for 4th of July week. I got fantastic seats for In the Heights for $57.50 per ticket. You can print them off at home, so no worry that the tickets won't arrive on time.
