NYC Progressive Rock venue

I may have asked this last yr too, sorry. We'll be in NYC March 20-25, and the one thing we have not been able to find is a venue/concert/club where my husband can catch a progressive rock group. Amazingly, we have had more luck finding these groups here in Madison WI. So, any suggestions? THANKS

Have you looked at the web site of Time Out New York? Typically you can find almost anything there (not sure how popular progressive rock is in NYC).

Also look at the Village Voice site
www.villagevoice.com for listings of live music/rock concerts.
Progressive rock isn't very popular here but there are venues that host such acts. The Bowery Ballroom is one of them. You can check their calendar at www.boweryballroom.com

Iridium Jazz Club is another good venue where you'll get prog rockers/former prog rockers perform. You can see their calendar on their website.
Another potential venue is BB King Blues Club.

Iridium and BB King's do not present progressive rock. Iridium this week has The Fabulous Thunderbirds,a Gene Krupa cover band and of course, Les Paul. And BB has Vonda White and a Bowie cover band.

As noted Try the Village Voice and Time Out NY for who is playing that that week but some places will include:

Bowery Ballroom (as noted)
Mercury Lounge
The Studio at Webster Hall
Poisson Rouge

There is also a new venue called City Winery that you might check out - beautiful new space
www.citywinery.com
looks like Phillip Glass will be there that weekend.
I'm actually not sure what you mean by progressive rock - when I was a young adult (that is, in a previous century) that meant bands like Yes and Emerson Lake and Palmer. Now - do you mean alternative/indie bands? Sufjan Stevens? Yo La Tengo? The Ting Tings?
You might have better luck in Hoboken or Wlliamsburg. And as has been suggested - check out time out and the village voice.

That's a good clarification that mp has asked for. Prog rock has evolved quite a bit since the days of Yes. To me bands like Spock's Beard, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Neal Morse etc. are the prog rock bands today. And I have seen some of them perform at Iridium, BB King etc. although you're more likely to find them at some of the other spots mentioned.

Well, if Rush goes on tour for its 40th anniversary, every venue it plays will count.

And if you or the hubby are using prog rock as a synonym for the increasingly inaccurate (and over-inclusive) indie or alternative, then you're best off looking for the specific groups and determining when and where they're touring.

Some bands need time to find their groove.
